MMU2S Default filament: Can it be set to "last used" or to something specific?

In Prusa Slicer when using the i3 Mk3 MMU2S an object can have as the tool/extruder "Default" in addition to a specific Extruder (1~5).

How and where is the "Default" set?

I would have expected it to be whatever filament was last loaded into the MMU2s (eg "no change") but it is always going back to Extruder 1.

Is there a way to set it to be whatever filament was last loaded?

Default extruder makes most sense when you have a multipart object.
The separate parts of the multipart object is set to default, and inherits the extruder chosen for the object, if you change the objects extruder to #2 all parts set to default still inherits the new setting which is now #2, not extruder #1

Maybe adding a response will get this question answered. As far as I can tell, the default label is there just to irritate all of us. I can find no reference to the meaning and/or purpose of that label.

Can anyone answer this question?
