MK3 Nozzle to PINDA Height Distance

Asking for official info from PRUSA Support.

There are so many threads and blogs out there on this topic it is hard to find the official answer.
To get a mathematically perfected desired z calibration based on the PRUSA standard mk3 setup,
What are the desired engineered heights?
1. Is it the PINDA to the sheet?
2. Nozzle to PINDA difference?
3. Other?
And what are the desired measurements.
TIA!

Re: MK3 Nozzle to PINDA Height Distance

I'm just a regular user, but I have two i3 Mk3's and I found that following the instructions has given me consistent results. I did nothing special at all.

Hi Lawrence,

if you want official information, you need to either find the information in the assembly manual for your printer, or chat with support on the echat service on the shop pages

I followed the manual, for mk2, mmuv1 and mk3 and each time I have had success.

be aware that the larger the negative number for live Z, the closer your pinda is, to the printed surface and the less leeway you have when a print curls or lifts

regards Joan

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

Thanks Joan and Dale. I have mine setup. I'm looking for a number.
I'm assuming that in the design phase, there was a number it was designed against.

Re: MK3 Nozzle to PINDA Height Distance

the instructions are written to tell you to use the thickness of a zip tie (between 0.7 to 1.2 mm depending where you measure it) as a starting point for adjustment due to manufacturing tolerances in the PINDA sensor... they can not be absolutely identical even within lots at an economic price point so you are taught how to adjust things on your printer to get the required result.

Hello Lawrence,
Most likely you will not get official answer here as it is more user to user forum.
As a user with engineering background I can tell you that there is no magic number TM. Every PINDA probe has a tolerance same as the magnets/ placement. That's why the official guidelines give you a rough starting point and the guidelines how determine the perfect number for your PINDA/printer/bed. Welcome to a applied science 😉

I think if there were a "mathematically perfect" tolerance, it's likely that Prusa would include that along with a method of measuring that to position everything properly. I think you might be looking for a degree of precision that is unreasonable to expect and unlikely to exist.

What do you plan to do with this knowledge if you can acquire it?

probe->probe point is what actually matters, but you can't measure that directly which is why the distance from probe->sheet is what you're told to check.

the inductive probe will have a response curve and is more/less sensitive based on position, whereas the position of the nozzle is relatively fixed. There is no perfect height within a certain range, which is why liveZ exists. 2mm from probe to sheet will get you within a couple hundred microns, and adjust liveZ from there.

Thanks everyone. And thanks Curtis.
I'm working on getting my calibration as fine tuned as possible.
