MINTEMP BED Error (traced to thermistor wires)

New to the club, just got my printer (mk3s) three weeks ago.

After 10 days of print time and ~500m filament, I just had my first hardware-type failure during a print. I got the MINTEMP BED error and, sure enough, the bed temp was reading 0°/0°.

First, I noticed that moving the bed backwards on the axis caused the connection to re-establish and read 22°. I removed the cable cover on the heatbed, nothing appeared to be pinched or nicked thermistor appeared to still be stuck well to the bed. I detached the bed and pulled off the mesh on the wires to the bed, again finding no visible damage. After playing with it some, I found that if I firmly held the bed and wired in one hand, to prevent thermistor sensor movement, and used the other hand to keep the wires from moving around at the Einsy, I could bend the "middle section" of the wires around some and get the connection to fail. So it seems like it's not the thermistor sensor itself, but the wires between it and the Einsy.

Would this just mean a whole new thermistor is needed, as opposed to being able to repair anything? My understanding is that these sensors are fairly sensitive to getting damaged.

Thanks,
Nick

Yes, you'll need a new thermistor, if you've only just bought it go the the Prusa Support chat on the main site and see if they can help, you may be able to get one under your warranty.

They’re so darn cheap, no need to futz around with a broken cable. And buy a couple of spares.

@fuchsr

Thanks for the reply, yeah I looked up the price on them after posting this definitely not worth worrying about trying to repair, but I'm not sure why it failed so (seemingly) quickly. I'll order a couple so it doesn't shut me down completely next time!

@3delight

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately it'll be out of warranty since I received it partially built from a relative who purchased it in 2019 and lost interest in the project. Seems like the best path is to buy a couple replacement thermistors.

I had this same issue last week.  I was able to trace the problem to an area of the thermistor wires.  I cut out the section and replaced it, soldering new wire in place and using shrink wrap tubes.  All good now, well so far.

@rubix

There's always a risk when picking up a failed project that parts have been abused.  It might still be in warranty, the default period is two years.  You will need the original order details.

Cheerio,

I keep 2-3 setting in by parts box just in case.
