RE: How to delete MMU from MK3S?

So I got the MMU on thursday.  I installed the upgrade from MK3s -> MK3s+ the same day and did some test prints.

I took friday off from work and upgrade the same printer from MK3s+ to MMU2S.

After talking to my pal Stewartr,  I had printed the following in advance and acquired a pack of the connectors.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3233579

The build went fine.

I'll say after a few rookie mistakes  I've got this working.  no upgraded tubes etc.  I did use razor blade on a few places in the filament path where I felt things could snag.  This was mostly where the filament comes out of the small PTFE tubes inside the unit.  Most of my initial issues however have been mistakes on my part or not having read the manual.  The IR sensor calibration was the first thing I missed.  This is critical!    Make sure you do it.  There's a good prusa vid on it.  TL;DR,  with allen key in the sensor should read one, with allen key out it should read zero.  Oh, and make sure your small PTFE tubes inside the unit are facing the right direction!  Again, rookie mistakes on my part.

I ran 5 hours of a 3 material print last night and I stopped the print after over a hundred tool changes simply because I didn't want to leave it running overnight.   I did that in PLA.

This morning I decided to do some soluble filament.  And that appears to be working as well.

It definitely ups the complexity a bit but so many things I have wanted to print need the soluble supports so as long as this stays working it was worth the effort.

Just a quick note to express my appreciation for you taking the time to put together your thorough instructions on how to remove the MMU. My printer is happily printing in its original configuration, the MMU sitting in some bin, and all is good. Cheers!  👍

Rockin' good report on the MMU2!  I've been on and off the fence on that for a bit. Maybe, for me.  Maybe...

What's up with your high stylin' enclosure?  Looks a bunch nicer, cleaner, and simpler than the Lack.  Looks great!  Please clue me in!

Don’t trust forum advice.

I have a working and reasonably well behaved MMU2S, but I don't use it that often.

I installed the power cut-off switch to the MMU2S which allows the machine to be a normal MK3S most of the time.  The small enclosure for this is in the prints section.  There are two threaded holes on the frame that almost appear to be meant for something like this.  I used a DPST switch to cut both of the power leads.

Contrary to what some are saying, no firmware downgrade is necessary to get it to behave as a non-MMU MK3S.

Just disconnect the Bowden tube from the extruder and insert the filament there.  Just press gently on the idler to get the auto-load started.

If/when you want to do a multi-material print, just turn the switch back on and reconnect the Bowden tube.

wow thats what i need to do with mmu2.... can you tell me how you did this and where i can buy/find the materials/info. thanks

the chances are that your filament sensor is on the edge of properly adjusted, and occasionally errors...

the filament sensor tower is a a bit sensitive to adjustment...
I fitted an LED so that I could see immediately if there was an issue with the sensor

the picture above shows my MMU Tower with LED, the image below shows where I fitted My 5volt RED LED. it's in the same relative position on both printers

the MMU version has the filament sensor mounted in the additional tower

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

I just tried what was suggested in the "lazy" way and also enabled the filament sensor. When I go to print, it is asking to insert the filament, but it doesn't seem to pull the filament in, so it just waits at that screen. What else do I need to do?

Thanks,

Chip

For me, I ended up doing the steps originally listed (the Lazy way still wasn't working). Got it working on my first non-mmu print. I just never could get reliability using the mmu2s, waste of time and money if you ask me

The little switch housing is in the Prints section, ditto with the remixed manifold for the quick-release bowden fittings.  Sorry, I do not have direct links handy but a search for 'MMU2S' should find them and more.

The switch is a Marquardt 1852 Miniature Panel Mount Rocker Switch - DPST - 125V 6A - 250V 4A, available at most any large electronics supply house.  It snaps right in.  Be sure to break both the + and - power leads in the off position.

These steps were so detailed and helpful! The MMU is great in principle, and I got a few really cool looking prints with it. But it experiences so many jams & loading failures (even in doing just normal 1-color prints) that mine was a brick most of the time. Thanks a bunch!
