Hotend Discoloration

Howdy! I’ve been printing with my Mk3S for about 5 months now. It’s been great and I have no real complaints. Just a concern...

The printed parts around my hotend are all turning white. There is a white haze over it all. Is this a problem? I don’t mind if it just happens, but it appears a bit abnormal. The only thing I’ve changed since I put the kit together is the nozzle (it’s the Oslon Ruby now). Thank for the help!

That is a combination of plasticizer loss from the PETG parts and deposited vaporized emissions from the print filament. Some of that change is normal and inevitable. It probably does not mean imminent parts failure unless you also see layer delamination or warping of the extruder parts. I recommend you go ahead and printer yourself a set of spare extruder plastic parts out of PETG. That way you have a means of repair if/when the parts fail.

Thank you so much for the wisdom and quick reply! I haven’t seen any delamination, but I’ll keep an eye on it. I’ll get another set printed right away too.  Just to keep on hand.

would it be beneficial to print the new parts out of a stronger material like Nylon, or does it not really matter? Thanks again!

RE: Hotend Discoloration

I to have noticed the discoloration and thinking that I should print new parts as well, I'm going to print them in black ASA which should be better for temp than the PETG. This should be alright...shouldn't it. @AdamEEE did you print the part out of something other than PETG...was it an easy replacement?

You could always use a silicone sock.
