High pitched noise from part cooling fan

Since a few weeks my Prusa I3 Mk3 is making a high pitched noise during printing. I found out that the noise is coming from the part cooling fan. I've attached a recording of the noise to this thread. The noise is very annoying and it feels as the printer is almost twice as loud as before.

Any ideas what could cause this noise? Is the fan maybe damaged or coud this be a manufacturing defect of the fan? (My printer is only 2 months old)

Re: High pitched noise from part cooling fan

What are you printing with? Is the part cooling fan running on full speed or is scaled down?

If it's set to not run at full speed (like for PETG for example) it's a known issue ( https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/issues/460 ), there is a hacky firmware ( https://github.com/zoltanf/Prusa-Firmware/releases/tag/v3.5.1-w1193 ) I patched together that helps.

Thanks for the hint. Lately I was actually only printing in PETG and now I'am not exactly sure if I also had the problem with PLA. For my audio file I removed the filament completely and started the selftest of the printer. But I'am not sure which fan speeds are used in the selftest. I will test if I can also hear the noise when printing PLA.

You can set the fan speed - even when not printing - with Code M106 Sxxx where xxx is a number between 0 and 255. M107 turns the fan off too. Handy for figuring the noise out

I've just tested this. The high pitched noise stops at value 245. With every value below I can hear the noise. With some values it is louder than with others, even with higher values.

Any chance that this will be fixed in the official firmware?

That sounds like (pun intended) like the software PWM freq issue. Prusa is aware (in talking to support they say it's a know issue), but who knows if this or similar fix will make it into the official firmware. I was annoyed enough to take the source code and make a merge myself.

Also having the part cooling fan at 45 degrees does not help, since the bearing vibrates even more. There are parts developed by community that you can print that put's the fan back to being vertical, and that helps somewhat (cooling/bridging is not affected IMHO).

Ok thanks for the hint. Are there any known problems with this custom firmware? I found a comment in the code that this could increase the heat on the electronics board.

Yes that is a possibility. However that is pretty hard to determine in real life scenarios. I have been running this modified version as a daily driver for weeks now, no problems so far. Others have as well. But there are no guarantees. Official patch would be best, but in my case the noise was driving my crazy, so I just could not wait.
