Filament jammed in extruder on i3 Mk3S

about 10 hrs into a 21 hr print I went to check on progress and found the nozzle/extruder assembly about 1/2" above the piece merrily doing its thing but no filament was coming out ....

followed the instructions in handbook for first cleaning the hotbed pulley - it wasn't dirty.  then the nozzle cleaning instructions but since no filament was going through the nozzle i then did the hotend clogged procedure.  while that did produce 1 or 2 tiny bubbles of melted filament i'm still unable to load any. the acupuncture needle can be inserted most of its entire length and you can tell its coming in contact with filament, then  when it heats up sufficiently to melt the end you can insert it to its entire length

when i try to insert the filament you can hear the pulley make this ratcheting noise and you can see it trying to completely rotate to grab on & load the filament but it never does and finally stops.  if you then hit the unload command the filament comes out because it hasn't really been grabbed that far my the pulley gear.

ideas for somehow clearing the piece of stuck filament?

UPDATE:  just tried using another filament I had - same stuff: Hatchbox 1.75mm PLA in white.  the stuff I was using was Hatchbox 1.75mm PLA orange.  Now when I try to load you can the gear turning smoothly - no ratching, but it still doesn't load.  upon removal you can see teeth marks in the filament on the first couple of mimimeters ...

Ok, looks like I've solved the issue ... had to resort to my dinosaur fossil preparation kit but I was able to use one of the picks to dislodge the filament from up against the gear & insert the tip into it to move it just enough that my needle nose could grasp it and pull it free.  now assuming I can put the 2 screws back correctly I should be in business ....
