Fan failure

Hi,

my mk3 has developed an intermittent part cooling fan failure (the front fan, not the side fan). It has failed twice now part way through a 10 hour print. Last night I was able to continually 'resume' print to finished it off as it had only 50 minutes left. I could see from the tune menu that the fan speed was recorded as being lower than expected - less than 50. I am not sure if that is what the gcode is telling the fan to spin at, or if it is feedback from the fans tacho. I was able to finish this print, and start another of the same print. Got up this morning and the print had failed again, around 3 hours into the print. I tossed that in the bin and thoroughly cleaned the fan as there was a fair amount of 'fluff' build up. So I then set off another print before setting off to work. I have been remotely checking the print with 'getanywhere' and can see the print has stalled again at 36%. I wont be able to see it until I return home later.

So clearly the fans works to a certain point. I have ordered a replacement, but has anyone else experience of a similar failure, ie the fan is not totally dead ?

Thanks in advance,

Texy

RE: Fan failure

Not had a fan actually fail but I have had a break in a wire to the fan which caused it to be reported as fan failed when the cables got to a position where the break was active.  iirc it was on the feedback wire that the mainboard uses to monitor the fan speed.  I replaced the wire and havent had a problem since.

RE: Fan failure

I did get a fan failure error Several times in the past. Each time, it involved a piece of filament in the fan hindering the fan from spinning.

It's definitely spinning. I've come home tonight and have been able to resume print. Nothing obviously wrong, but maybe a sign that either there is a bad wire or connection or that the fan is on its way out. I've got a (3rd party) replacement on its way but its the downtime that is a killer at a very busy time...….

Yeah that’s the thing about about an intermittent connection on the sense wire, the fan will be spinning without problem but the einsy isn’t getting the feedback so it thinks the fan isn’t working. Wire breaks are the worst as often they only happen when the wire bundle is at certain positions so can be hard to diagnose or find.

Indeed. What a shame you can't disable it, obviously only if you are 100% sure the fan IS actually spinning.

Actually you can disable it, and I have for the short term...settings/Fan Check [On/Off]. The MK3 needed a restart to set it. It was easy to test as well, without needing to print.

I've had the same problem. The cause was a damaged (pinched) fan cable.
At a certain level there was poor contact and the fan stopped. After repair, it worked properly again.

@rhdreambox

the same problem with my radialfan - defective pwm signalcable. Now I always have a fan as a replacement, bought here:

https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/spare-parts/201-print-fan.html

or here:
