Extrusion multiplier guide (Requested)

After testing extrusion steps, i'm trying to dial in the extrusion multiplier to clean up what i think it over extrusion. I printed the 40mmx40mm cube as suggested in the knowledge base and got an average wall thickness of 0.69mm on 4 different cubes over all 4 sides. Doing the maths 0.45 / 0.69 gives me 0.652. This number is quite different to the guides suggests of 0.9 to 1.1. Does this seem way out? My filament diameter is pretty constant at 1.75mm and PLA. Does a multiplier of 1 work well for prusament? Why would mine be different is material type is the same and diameter is the same.

Is this required for each different filament from here on, and then a fresh z height, as i would imagine it could affect the first layer squish.

Did you select vase print? in Print Settings.

I did exactly as you did the first time and got a thicker walled print.

You should get what you have set as your External Perimiters width with Vase Print ticked.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

That does seem way out to me.

Once I dialled in the extruder steps using https://mattshub.com/blog/2017/04/19/extruder-calibration then printing a cube with 2 walls and zero top/bottom layers gets me a wall thickness of iirc 0.91 last time I checked.  So I just left it at 1 as that was close enough for me.

Out of interest what are you using to measure your wall thickness ?

@chocki

Yeh I selected vase mode which I assumed automatically sets it to one perimeter but I could be wrong I will retry again shortly.

@neophyl

I used that same guide although I did find the feed speed value puzzling as some tutorials said to extrude as close of possible to your normal print speed were as that guide says 50mm/m which is slow.

I haven’t tried doing the 2 walls yet just one so I will try again. One interesting thing is that if I reduce the layer height I get closer to the nozzle diameter like 0.3 layer I’m way out, as 0.15 I’m very close.

I’m using kincrome digital calipers and a micrometer.
