Cooling Problem? Need some help.

Hello

I have a problem i cannot identify…

1. I own a Prusa Mk3
2. a few days ago i updated to latest published Firmware 3.2
3. checked everything if its correct (Live Z, Extrusion…) = it is (see 25mm Cube MattsHub is using as an example attachment)
4. I printed a normal Benchy (see attachment, pretty ok)

5. Now i wanted to print something new (never printed before, so no examples from very good working firmware before) - large light bulb: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2280081
a) I got very bad results, and i do not know why. I sliced with (S3d, Slic3r 1.39.1, 1.39.2, 1.40.1a) but its everytime nearly the same result (see picture(s) for the base i printed - Bulb base, 3 Bulb bases).

b) i experimented with different filaments, extrusions etcpp. All parameters are correct (filament diameter too)
6. Because i thought its maybe the thingy i tried to print something different (Bathtub): https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2631794
But it came out bad too. See at the Bottom and on the top.

I used standard Parameters for slicer (PLA, 210/60, Fan to 100% from Layer2, 2 and 3 Perimeters (tested both), not too fast (standard Prusa), 0.2 Layer Height).
Yes, all parameters like skew, belt etc are fine and checked..

What might be the problem? Is it a cooling problem? Do i need a different shroud? Whats your experience with that Thingies?
Do i need a sock for my E3d?

with the old(er) Firmware it printed like a champ.

best regards
Joerg

This looks strange ! It seems your layers-perimeters are twisting 😮

Did you print outer perimeter first ?

Slic3r, Print Settings, Layer and Perimeters, Advanced, External Perimeters first ?

Maybe the overhangs are to big ?

By the way, you can only post 3 images in one post, it's limited by the fourm settings.

Hi Thomas

No. Its not set.

>Maybe the overhangs are to big ?

I do not know. Hoped, that someone other may have had experience with the bathtub or the bulb (bulb is faster to detect if its going wrong).
Maybe someone is able to test the bulb base.

bytheway. with he same settings cubes, benchy and other things are not an problem...

Ah ok, that explains it. Thanks.

Re: Cooling Problem? Need some help.

From the prints I was getting, I believe that the stock prusa part cooling nozzle mainly blows air from the front, causing the back to not be properly cooled.

I printed a different fan shroud and am much happier with the backs of prints now.

I also adjusted my PLA to a bit lower temp of 206, which helps with bridges and overhangs.

Hope that helps.

Hello

I am not sure, if its cooling problem or not. Are you able to check and print that bulb base with your printer?
My temp for PLA is already 205 for the second layer and above.

I assume i have to print the shroud in petg (which i do not have at the moment).
Did you compared your mentioned shroud to that one? -> https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2740613

The shroud should be in ABS, PETG will droop after a while.
PRUSA delivers the fan shroud printed in ABS.

Joerg, sure, I can try the bulb base and post a pic.

I did not try the JLTX shroud, no. The one I posted was a direct fit in place of the stock prusa.

As gert.l mentioned, you should print it in ABS as PET will melt after a bit or with longer run prints. Definitely do not use PLA.

If you are having issues with printing ABS, then you could print a throwaway in PET to test and see if your print is any better.

That would be good to see someone other printing that. Thanks in advance.

In the meantime i tested PLA with and without LA. But no difference.

Joerg

ps.: will try to print one shroud in PET the next days.

Re: Cooling Problem? Need some help.

Here is the print.

I am on the latest 3.21 firmware and latest Slic3r 1.39.2.

Used a 206 PLA filament extruder temp with 60 bed. I slowed the speed down to 75% after the first ring because the speed started extruding a bit sloppy on the overhangs for my taste. Was smooth the rest of the way.

Judging from you original pictures, I believe that the transition to full speed happened for me at around the same level.

Like I said before it looks like its a matter of cooling. Try slowing the print speed down and the PLA filament temp to see if that helps before you print a new fan shroud.

Hope that helps.

Printed your shroud... (in petg)
Left slicer 1.4 Right Cura 3.3
For slic3r i used the code file from before.

Here is the result...
