Can we get a Cura profile specifically for the MK3?

It'd be nice if we had an official Cura profile to use for the MK3. I like using Cura simply because it's it has the most features that I like out of the slicers I've used.

Prusa has an official profile for the Mk2 on the support page ( https://www.prusa3d.com/drivers/ ).

Is there any word of the Mk3 getting a profile for Cura?

EDIT:

Oh, and I want to say that I did try the profile from this thread: https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3-f30/mk3-cura-profile--t13916.html

I just don't get a good first layer at all with that profile (nor with the built in Cura MK2 profiles), so the prints don't turn out great. I can use Prusa Control and the first layer will turn out literally perfect, so I know it's not a bed leveling/z height issue.

I'll +1 this.

I like Sli3er but
a) some of my model do supports and cura does it better
b) one set of models I print a lot have a stringing issue when printing an overhang at 0% infill when using slic3er. It is something about cura printing a perimeter first then printing the connecting lines, while slic3er does it the other way.

I've been building a Cura profile. Would it be helpful to post here when I've finalized it?

That would be great. I've been using PrusaControl and Slic3r and the supports never come off as cleanly as they did when I used Cura and an Ultimaker machine, and I'd like to see if Cura makes the difference.

That would be helpful. I'm new to 3d printing and have been using SLic3r PE which works well, but I want to try other slicers and it'd be nice to have a decent profile to start with.

Re: Can we get a Cura profile specifically for the MK3?

Okay, I can't find a way to export a printer profile in Cura (I'm not an expert...), so here's the machine settings I used. This is based on the defaults for a MK2 with a few modifications and some stuff copied from the Slic3r profile. To set this up create a custom machine in Cura and enter the following:

X (Width): 250mm
Y (Depth): 210mm
Z (Height): 210mm
Build plate: Rectangular
Origin at center: No
Heated Bed: Yes
Gcode flavor: RepRap
X min: 31mm
Y min: 40 mm
X max: 34mm
Y max: 31mm
Gantry Height: 28mm
Number of Extruders: 1

Start gcode:
M115 U3.1.1-RC4 ; tell printer latest fw version
M83 ; extruder relative mode
G28 W ; home all without mesh bed level
G80 ; mesh bed leveling
G1 Y-3.0 F1000.0 ; go outside print area
G92 E0.0
G1 X60.0 E9.0 F1000.0 ; intro line
G1 X100.0 E12.5 F1000.0 ; intro line
G92 E0.0
M221 S95

End gcode:
G4; wait
M221 S100
M104 S0 ; turn off temperature
M140 S0 ; turn off heatbed
M107 ; turn off fan
G1 X0 Y200; home X axis
M84 ; disable motors

Unfortunately this forum won't let me attach the .curaprofile file, but here are the basic settings I used for a 0.15mm profile:

layer_height_0 = 0.2
material_bed_temperature = 60
bottom_layers = 4
cool_min_layer_time = 20
infill_pattern = lines
infill_sparse_density = 5
ironing_enabled = True
ironing_only_highest_layer = True
material_diameter = 1.75
material_print_temperature = 210
material_print_temperature_layer_0 = 215
optimize_wall_printing_order = True
outer_inset_first = True
retraction_hop = 0.8
retraction_hop_enabled = True
retraction_hop_only_when_collides = True
roofing_layer_count = 1
speed_infill = =speed_print
speed_layer_0 = 30
speed_print = 200
speed_roofing = 50
speed_travel = 250
speed_travel_layer_0 = 250
speed_wall_0 = 35
speed_wall_x = 45
top_layers = 4

Cura is going to complain about the 200mm/s print speed (it will highlight the box as a warning), but it seems to respect it and it doesn't cause a problem. But you will need to override some of the calculated speeds like perimeters and first layer since they wind up being too fast. You may also need to turn on the visibility of those settings, since not all of them are visible by default.

Cura does a much nicer job with support than Slic3r, though it definitely has quirks of its own. The ironing in Cura is really nice, but that's supposed to be coming to Slic3r soon. If they would fix the support in Slic3r I'd probably only use that, but it doesn't seem to be a priority.

Would you mind emailing me it if I pm you my email? I'll put it up on a Dropbox link for everyone. Also, do you have a profile for .2 instead of only .15?

Sure.

I don't have a profile for 0.2 yet, but I don't think it will take too much effort. The main thing to watch out for is limiting the volumetric flow rate at high print speed, since Cura doesn't enforce that limitation.

I have a copy of Peter's .15 profiles, with and without support, here:

Let me know if there is any issue with the link.

Re: Can we get a Cura profile specifically for the MK3?

This is what I am running atm, by looking what came out of slic3r PE and prusa control:

Start G-code

M115 U3.1.3 ; tell printer latest fw version
M83 ; extruder relative mode
M104 S{material_print_temperature_layer_0} ; set extruder temp
M140 S{material_bed_temperature_layer_0} ; set bed temp
M190 S{material_bed_temperature_layer_0} ; wait for bed temp
M109 S{material_print_temperature_layer_0} ; wait for extruder temp
G28 W ; home all without mesh bed level
G80 ; mesh bed leveling
G1 Y-3.0 F1000.0 ; go outside print area
G92 E0.0 ; reset extruder distance position
G1 X60.0 E9.0 F1000.0 ; intro line
G1 X100.0 E21.5 F1000.0 ; intro line
G92 E0.0 ; reset extruder distance position
M221 S95 ;Set extrude factor override percentage
M900 K30 ;Set Linear Advance Scaling Factors
G21 ; set units to millimeters
G90 ; use absolute coordinates
M83 ; use relative distances for extrusion

End G-Code

G4 ; wait
M221 S100
M104 S0 ; turn off temperature
M140 S0 ; turn off heatbed
M107 ; turn off fan
G1 X0 Y200 ; home X axis
M84 ; disable motors

Re: Can we get a Cura profile specifically for the MK3?

In case anyone stumbles into this post…

don't try to copy all the settings on @peter.l22 post by hand.

Create a profile, no need to edit anything and then find your profiles stored as a file in your computer. Find the location here.

In my case, for example it was:
~/Library/Application\ Support/cura/3.2/quality/fdmextruder_mk3%3A+0.1.inst.cfg

Then edit and copy paste.

I'm sure that's what the first poster intended but I was halfway through trying to replicate the changes when it hit me that that would be stored on a file somewhere.

EDIT: or you can just download @alan.e2 files and import them using the GUI but that would be too easy for me, wouldn't it?
Sorry it's late where am I and I'm not at my best. I'll go to bed now.

Re: Can we get a Cura profile specifically for the MK3?

I have a problem I'm not sure how to report.

Since using this plugin in cura I'm having skips in my extruder gear.

I did not experience that while slicing with slic3r with prusa profiles nor while slicing with cura and the default settings.

I am not sure that something on the profile is causing this but I seem to print fine otherwise.

Did you notice something similar?

me too, please share the cura profile for mk3 😳

i need to reduce the printer speed to 80% to avoid the extruder to skipping

Do you have a video showing the skipping? Is it like this? https://www.facebook.com/groups/892917067538312/permalink/1016544125175605/

Yes, it was like that.

I stopped using cura since then and dissassembled and reassembled my hot end and now it does work. You can search my forum posts for more info but it's all arround the forum if you search "clicking".

Based on my efforts to try to troubleshoot this I did a post on the different "clicking sounds" the prusa does in case you are interested:

Re: Can we get a Cura profile specifically for the MK3?

This is my built and tested profile: MK3 + Cura 3.3 in 0.2 mm layer height.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Gbgpq0-dZQ5KQci4oM7Oz4WiFVnE7Rk7

It includes parameters for e.g. ironing, variable layer heights and others (if you turn them on).
I trust it, when nothing should go wrong. 😉

Feedback appreciated.
Cheers, Frank
