What makes a Prusa i3 so good and popular?

Hi, I apologize if this post is a bit biased as I am an Ender 3 owner myself, but I am genuinely curious of what features and designs make the Prusa i3 MK3 one of the best regarded consumer/hobby FDM printers. I simply want to learn and see how I can upgrade my own for better prints!

I know that it features many premium sensors such as the PINDA bed leveling or filament runout (?). Also the direct drive and dual z-axis give it an edge over others.

However, I see that some parts like motor mounts are 3D printed plastic, and the frame itself seems to be some kind of composite. Based on what I’ve seen, the z-axis linear rails are secured with zip ties too? Seen like this, it seems like the Prusa is lower-end hobby level.

There’s many printers such as the Ender 3 or Wanhao Duplicators that offer all-metal frames and comparable print quality for a fraction of the price. Although, being Chinese knock offs, the part qualities aren’t always up to spec.

So, I would like to know what is it about Prusa i3 printers that set it apart in price and in print quality such that enthusiasts pick it as opposed to a alternative?

At this point, I'd suggest simply viewing the myriad reviews on YouTube. They do a good rundown on the features and benefits. I think you'll find the frame doesn't add as much as the overall design and fit, but don't take anybody's word for it. In particular, pay attention to the projects targeting upgrading any other printer "to a Prusa Mk3 at 1/3 the cost" videos.

The new Mini offers the Prusa quality in a smaller build at $350. That will be the new target.

Hello. You named already couple important and I can add the big and great community, removable magnetic bed and great support.

Beside of that it's still an FDM printer under $1000.

My opinion is that the MK3 hit the sweet spot for functionality vs price.  Most of the cheaper printers are missing a few elements that make the MK3 so easy to use.  My MK3 has been super reliable.

Concur and the fact that you can tinker with it and get good results.  Top that with the community that supports each other and you have a winning product.
