The MK3S upgrade is really a downgrade

The MK3S upgrade is really a downgrade the original sensor not only detects the filament it also monitors the filament movement ie: a jam and takes action.
I never had an issue with all the filaments I have used and I use a lot of clear or translucent filaments. Just make sure the sensor is clean.

The new MK3S sensor is just a on off switch no intelligence.

If you still need the function of the MK3S On OFF sensor function you only need to turn to thingiverse and search Prusa Mk3 indirect filament you can reuse you existing sensor no upgrade needed.

You can put that money towards the Prusa I3 MK2/s, MK2.5, MK3 with BMG exturder mod to get the best bang for the buck and improve your print quality

I'm happy your original filament sensor worked for you, but it definitely did not for an awful lot of people - me included. Endless false triggers, so much I had to disable it on both of my Prusa's a long time ago.

As far as intelligence and monitoring movement and filament jams, those "features" never actually worked at all reliably or repeatably for the majority of users. The laser filament sensor was never able to fulfil the promises made for it - it was not fit for purpose.

The Mk3S release is definitely a worthwhile upgrade, and one of its best features is that is removes the useless laser sensor and replace it with a tried and tested solution.

That's a rumor. The source code is telling a different story.

Was it advertised as detecting jams? I recall run out detection being advertised (Jan 18).

Edit: Ah, look like it was, though it didn't sound too stable. I missed that!

Edit 2: Is it confirmed that the ball bearing is not being used as a motion proxy for the actual filament? It only detects runout?

The issue is that this sensor detects jam by looking at the filament movement in the Y-direction. Due to the natural movement of the filament during the print you're getting practically either false notifications if it's too sensitive or it doesn't detect at all. So far my MK3 didn't detect any jams with various different filaments. Though the runout functionality works fine for me.

So personally I like the MK3s upgrade because the reliability of the runout functionality got improved. I can keep the sensor active all the time and the maintenance (no need to keep it super clean) is reduced a lot.

the sensors were tested by the guy who makes duet wifi and monitoring movement was unstable for this purpose... worse the faster you print.

Explain how exactly.

I’m another one who found the optical sensor to be a mixed blessing at best. The new design should be an improvement for run-out detection. Jam detection is nice but not crucial to me.

The Holy Grail for me would be a Blob of Death detector.

What bothers me is that people are waiting 10-12 weeks for such a small "hope" of something!

Some will see improvement , some wont.

Some will hope their perfect printer that already producing amazing prints improve any more!

There are solutions out there for everyone! LOOK online!

Prusa failed me. One person told me this, one person told me that, i dont forgive that, So i cancelled my order!

If your printer is already doing what you want it to do, don't take a chance!

I am doing very well with my Bondtech pancake motor upgrade attached to my aftermarket MMU2 from China!

Dont have to wait until June/July/Febtober/

Yes, those of us who read through your venting thread understand your frustration. Please get past it.

I think Bobstro was asking about your results with the modification that you did do... I'd also be interested.

I have a couple questions about your pancake motor.
1. It has less surface area than the stock motor, there for less cooling. Do you have any issues with it getting hot (or hotter than stock)?
2. Did you have to change any max current settings for this, or is it running ok as a drop-in replacement?
3. Do you see less ringing with the less massive motor on the extruder?

Sheesh.

Edit: Don't bother. Looks like somebody else was kind enough to post pics of their results without a tantrum.
