Strange crackling noise

Hello forum,

my new Prusa i3 MK3S began emitting strange crackling noises after 2 weeks of usage.

As far as I can tell:

It comes somewhere from extruder zone.

It seems noise appears when extruder is moved at some angle (Y+X).

It does not affect printing quality.

I tried to fasten all the bolts, checked belt tension. Nothing helps. Perhaps anyone had the same issue?

Video of the cracking noise:

Thank you for the help.

Hard to tell from the video but it sounds like the nozzle could be making slight contact with the printed infill?

RE: Strange crackling noise

I have such noise too from time to time. Two kinds of it...one I guess is small residuals of filament strings that "wipe" or "brush"over the printed pattern. Almost only happens when I use PETG. Another noise is from the linear ball bearings. If they are a little misaligned and under stress, the balls inside may make some noise when they "snap" in and out of the loaded zone. The balls are arranged in a number of circuits and those circuits are very sensitive for blocking which may result in that the balls not roll but instead slides. And this sliding vs rolling may change both depending on what position you are in on the axis and also the direction you move.

From my personal point of view, the mechanics of the Prusa is very rough compared to what is required for a linear ball bearing to work optimal. But by careful assembly, this can be compensated but it may change over time. The fact that plastic parts and solutions like cable ties, U-bolts etc are involved, it is amazing how good it works after all :-).

I have just ordered the /MK3S+ upgrade and will give the mechanics an overhaul when it arrives. My printer as it is today was express-assembled by my 14 year son over a long night...and it was the first ever mechatronic system he ever assembled (unless assembling a couple of gaming PC's count as some experience...)

RE: Strange crackling noise

have that also when moving the extruder by hand? ive had that issue. bearings scratching the rods. will become worse over time. sanded my rods with 600 paper. oiled. now less noise.

No, tried to move all extruder by hand, there is no crackling.

Doesn't look that way, it seems sound is comming a bit higher than nozzle.

sounds like perhaps something is flexing or maybe slightly out of alignment. Could try slight release the screws make sure everything looks right and re-tighten. Also check that the nylon filament hasn't worked it's way lose perhaps it's moving around and is no longer snug in it's spot on the back of the x-carriage.

Still have no clue - last print was silent as it was in the beginning. Will monitor this for longer time. If sound will appear again, I'm thinking about re-assembling  extruder.
