Silicone sock how long do they last?
Hi I have had to replace a E3D sock only after 3 weeks of use for a new one
The sock was so brittle it fell apart. i seem to remember that the on before lasted very well.
could it have any thing to do with that i am now almost all the time printing PETG at 255c?
any thoughts?

Probably 🙂 Printing PLA and they seem to last forever, print a batch of PETG and yeah they do die earlier.
Dread to think how fast they would die if you printed PC or similar all they time.
If I was doing that I'd make up a mould and make some in a very high temp silicone.

I've had cheap clones crumble after a week. Genuine E3D typically last months. I do wrap thin wire around the sock to avoid sagging.

Thanks for that i thought it was me, good job i have a few in stock.
when i first started with socks i thought they would last a long time, thinking about it the one on the CR10S has never be changed.
mind you i have only ever used Pla in that, i have a spare cr10 one i might see if it can be modded to fit.

Same order from Amazon - one of the socks fell apart after a couple of months. The current one has been on for roughly a year and both were PETG only using the same settings. The first one literally fell apart with blue bits in the prints. I had a bit of a problem with the second in that the nozzle hole would curl the filament back up onto the hot end. A bit of work with an Xacto knife to make the hole bigger and all has been well since.
I took the current one off a couple of months ago when I did maintenance and. other than having the white powder stuff in it that PETG seems to generate, it was still flexible. I cleaned it up and put it back on.
No clue as to why the difference in the life of the socks and I do keep spares around just in case...
