Prusaprint vs. latest Octoprint

I just purchased an rpi3 b+ and want to set it up for octoprint. I've read through all the prusa guides for this and found that they have a "modified" version called prusaprint, but they also have a guide on how to use the general build and get it to connect with a couple of config file changes.

My original thought was to get the latest octoprint and add their config changes to use GPIO and such. But then I wondered if there are other changes they have made which allow some of the mk3 features to work and I would be better off with the prusaprint version.

Also, it sounds like there is a "install updates" option from within octoprint and it was unclear if this worked without messing up the prusa config changes. Anyone here know?

One question for the experts. I was originally planning on wiring it up via GPIO just to save the USB port, but I need a separate power source (using USB LED's and such). But now I'm wondering if it's "more standard" and therefore simpler to just use USB and unplug it anytime I need to do a firmware upgrade to the mk3. Any recommendations here? If I do USB, I think I would just use the straight octoprint version which might be an advantage as well.

Thanks for the help getting things setup. (I know there is a 27 page saga about octoprint here, but I wasn't able to find this info with simple searches)

GPIO connection has no advantage over USB. You can unplug the usb from the printer anytime between prints, octoprint doesn't care, you just have to hit connect again. For firmware updates I just plug it into a laptop.

still unclear what that modified version actually does. octopi requires absolutely zero changes to connect and print successfully.

That's been my issue as well. The only descriptions are for the GPIO/serial port change, but other than that I'm not sure there are any differences with the prusaprint version. I'm hoping that any other enhancements for new sensor and such, are just being included in the mainline so I can use USB and just use the regular octoprint.

Let me know if anyone knows of other changes in the prusa version that are useful. Thanks.

You don't even have to do that. There's a firmware updater plugin for Octoprint that works fine for flashing the firmware on the MK3.

Prusaprint is really designed for the Pi Zero W... even then, I decided to just install Octopi and make the changes myself (not that hard, but if you shy away from terminal usage, then PrusaPrint on a Pi Zero might be best for you). Since you are using the Pi 3B+, just use the USB port and download Octopi 0.15. It is supposed to support the b+ (someone got 0.14 working with little/no effort). I use a Pi 3B on my MK2 and it works perfectly that way. I can also mount the pi closer to the camera and have a shorter cable.

Thanks for the help understanding the prusaprint vs. octopi. I think I'll go ahead and use the regular/latest octopi and USB as it sounds like a more robust solution with very little downside (as long as I went with the 3b+ instead of the zeroW). Thanks.
