Prusa i3 MK3 kit after 60+ hours of printing

its awesome!

I decided to write this post, because normally people only post if they have an issue. Since Prusa sells a LOT of printers, you can expect a lot of complaints, even if the relative percentage of complaints would be very low.

Before getting my prusa I had a CR-10. The CR-10 has always felt a bit limiting and less than perfect. I just want my prints done and move on with my projects, but the CR-10 always kept me back a bit: You always had to tune and fiddle around with it. (PETG as difficult, nylon impossible) So after reading tons of reviews I decided to order the MK3 and settle in for the wait. (it took 8+ weeks i think)

So far my experience with the mk3 has been excellent! Basically you hit print and prints come out perfect almost every time! My first PETG and PLA bency's that I sliced with Slic3r PE where perfect the first time!

One thing i've missed: There are somehow no generic Nylon profiles in Slic3r PE? So i had to create one myself, and after tuning a bit, my 3rd nylon benchy was perfect! (I use esun EPA)

The PEI buildplate is also excellent! Mine still looks like new after many prints. However dont forget to follow all the instructions. I use isopropyl for PLA/nylon and windex for PETG (i use a dedicated side of the build plate for each). I clean the sheet after every print.

Also dont force stuff of the buildplate if it sticks too much, since you might rip off the PEI i've read. Try to remove PETG around 40 degrees celcius, it comes of easier that way.

I already built dry-boxes for all my fillament: I have 4 boxes and a total of 20 spools of filament. Mostly eSun and Real filaments.

I did make one screwup: One linair bearing on the buildplate I probably tightened too much. The buildplate made scrapy noises from the beginning, but i read that it might be normal and disappear after few hours of printing. However it got worse, and the rod became damaged because of that. I cleaned the bearing with WD40, and relubed it with superlube, and fiddled around until it was gliding smooth again. (working around the groove that was grinded into the rod) I've been printing 30+ hours with that now and it seems fine.

I did however contact create3dshop.nl (where i bought it) and they send my 4 new bearings and 2 new rods, so if this one eventually craps out i can replace it. (i didnt expect it to last this long) They even send me Misumi smoothrods, instead of the stock ones. So they have great service! They also send me a new minibag of haribo 😛

Other than that i didn't have to do anything so far. I never even had to open the extruder or remove the nozzle or anything like that. I never clean the extruder when switching between PLA and PETG. I just swap it and go, no issues what so ever so far.

I also love the fact that its so low noise, since i enjoy sitting next to my printer while i code. Sometimes I use stealth mode, because it runs so super-smooth when you enable it. (but its a bit slower)

Its a joy to watch and its a joy to print with!

I'd second this! Probably around 100 hours of printing already - loving the printer, does a great balance of being robust where it should be, whilst flexible where you want it - got a list of about 30 mods, improvements etc I'd like to try next! (printed my lack enclosure, spool reel, camera mount etc!)

Had a few teething problems, but support been excellent and have to say, building yourself is highly recommended - great way to understand the printer properly. Fairly confident if problems do occur, I'll be able to fix it.

Keep up the great work Prusa!

Any chance you could share your settings in slic3r PE for this please? I've got a 0.5kg roll and would like to print more in it.

I agree completely. My printer is almost a year old, so maybe 500 hours of printing. The MK3 is awesome.

The only issues have been my own fault for printing without bothering to clean the bed properly.

So far I share the sentiment. Barring one firmware glitch I hit, all of my print failures have been my own fault (forgetting a brim, wrong settings, needing to clean the PEI more thoroughly).

Doesn't stop me from modding and tinkering to try to improve it more, but it's great knowing if I totally screw that up I can revert to stock and it'll print just fine.

Re: Prusa i3 MK3 kit after 60+ hours of printing

So, after some stuffing around, to make the ePA-CF (nylon/carbon fibre) print ok:

Hotend: 250C
Bed: 80C
Speed: Max 20mm/s, some of the other stuff at 15mm/s
Extrusion multiplier: 0.75 (down from 0.95)

Only thing I haven't got figured out is the retraction settings, its still stringing like crazy. Otherwise it's printing pretty well. Currently set at 0.8/35.

Edit: I would describe it as "fuzzy" coming out of the hotend. Also the low extrusion multiplier and temp was because once it hit 260 it just came oozing out like crazy.
