MK3 Power Consuption

I need calculate the power consuption for better power and price control. I know it can draw 250W max due it power supply limit while heating (full load), but like any other termistor the heaters goes on and off multiple times per second while keeping the temperature, cutting the power maybe for about a bit less than half of 240W. With that in mind does anyone already test and made a average power consuption while printing?

Also i would like to set accurate values on a octoprint plugin, which are set as:
PCB Heatbed: 98,5 watts
Hotend: 32,5 watts
Stepper motors: 0,6 watts
Cooling fans and electronics: 11,3 watts
Total: 142.9W is that a good AVG for the printer?

Re: MK3 Power Consuption

Hello

I hope I can help out a bit with my statistic (measured consumption is MK3 + Raspi + LED stripe)

I own the printer since dezember and in average I need between 50-60kWh per month.
My printer runs roughly 20 hours a day non stop with PLA mostly.

So take down some numbers:
2kWh/day / 20 = 0,1kWh/h (100-150 Watts very rough, I can’t remember the normal actual usage, for the printer in average and only the Raspi is running on the screenshot, so 10Watts for the Raspi)
1kWh is in my country roughly 20cents (€)
So roughly 150€ in a year of energy usage - plus a huge amount of filament spool...
I printed since Dezember about 4km of Filament.

Re: MK3 Power Consuption

The power usage is highly dependent on your environment and filament. Printing PLA vs ABS for example.
In addition I live in southern California and have my printer in an enclosure. Any values I will provide from my printer will be useless for someone who lives in Iceland and has his printer in a garage.
Means you have to make your measurements to get precise values.

Thank you daniel, pretty near my calculated value, i also run Pi 3 + led bar

I know that will differ, but i belive not that much, for example, an enclosure will help keep the temperature but maybe you need to use a fan for air take and some will have a active heat inside which can end to waste more power than the open frame due more working parts.

Still a best avg. value can be found and reported to users given the ambient temperature and filament, i would say PETG to stay in middle of PLA and ABS and 25ºc ambient temperature which is a good value for a comfortable living. That of course with the raw printer without mods.

Re: MK3 Power Consuption

Sorry, but I don't understand you. You want precise power consumption for your printer and in the same sentence you are talking about average usage.
What's the point calculating something for PETG and 25C ambient temperature, if you're printing PLA within enclosure?

If you want to have some average values, it's fine. But I see a conflict in your initial question.
BTW my average consumption is around 60W.

I've always talked about average...

"With that in mind does anyone already test and made a average power consuption while printing?"

The only accurate values i asked about was for the octo print plugin, which i don't know for sure how it work, if they wan't the total power or just the average consuption: https://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/stats/
Also people report their average will not hurt anyone, and would be interesting to see the differences 🙂

I'm still waiting for my meter, so i can't do real test now, but i mainly print on ABS now

Sorry, I misunderstood you.

I need calculate the power consuption for better power and price control...

That sounds to me like you would like to know exactly how much the printed part costs you. So you can provide a better price to the customer.

... With that in mind does anyone already test and made a average power consuption while printing? ...

My assumption was average for the printed part. As you already mentioned it varies through the whole print process.
