Layer shift on power panic.

I had power blink on and off momentarily last night. it reset my Oven clock and blinked the lights momentarily. I went down stairs to check on the print and the layer had shifted. I left the print finish anyway. I thought this issue was addressed in the last firmware? I guess not.

It didn't prompt me to continue the print. Should it have?

Re: Layer shift on power panic.

It won't prompt you if the outage was brief- the way it knows that is the temperature of the bed and nozzle is checked at power up- if they are still reasonably close to the print temps, then it simply resumes.

A shift during this event suggests your printer cannot reliably locate the home position at any height- this might mean your z-axis is not perfectly perpendicular to the print bed. Not much in the assembly that checks for this condition.

That is an interesting observation. I was not present when the power blip occurred but if I am understanding you correctly did the printer re home all of the axis or just the one and then resume or did it just resume printing when it detected the temps were still within range?

Re: Layer shift on power panic.

The last time I tested this, it re-homes the X and Y axis, but not the Z (it really can't do the Z, as there are parts on the bed). Rehoming X and Y is prudent, as it is the best way to trust it can resume with reasonable accuracy and success. But even this is prone to error, as you have seen. Note that this is simply a theory of mine- and in no way can it be certain this is why it had a slight layer shift.

Re: Layer shift on power panic.

When building my printer I noticed one of my cable ties was hitting the x axis when the extruded was pushed to home position. Something like that could cause inconsistent homing I imagine.

Re: Layer shift on power panic.

I had a short power failure last night, I saw the printer rehome and had a layer shift as well.

It happened to a less than 20 mm height on Z axis and the layer shift was about 1 mm, so it can't be a perpendicularity defect.

I have the last firmware as well (3.2.1)

Re: Layer shift on power panic.

I had this problem too. There was a brief power loss and printer (MK3 on 3.5.1 1778) resumed automatically, head was moved to (0, 0), reheated (only few degrees were lost), then continue to print. However, the resumed print was shifted to the right (e.g. X+) on about 1mm or 1.1mm. Running in stealth mode (e.g. crash detection).

RE: Layer shift on power panic.

I had exactly the same problem on my mk3. I triggered this by using my 2D printer. The brother 2D printer bascially make a very very short power glich when start (blinked the lights). My PC was running just fine my MK3 restarted. I didn't noticed any active homming action, although it did move to the home position to reheat. When it finish, the prints are shifted for 1mm to the right (home is at left).

I think there is a need for actual X home, like running the x till stall.

RE: Layer shift on power panic.

I’m guessing this is what happened here. Although, the camera is plugged into the same strip at the printer and it didn’t go out. Hmm.
