How to transfer profile from old version of cura into new version

I swear that the Cura installation script was developed in the early 1980's and never upgrade since them.   Each time you install a new version of Cura, it doesn't transfer any of the profiles from the old version nor give you an option to transfer them.  It then happy forces you to install the Ultimaker printer profile. The first time I did this, I was naive enough to think that this was modern software that would never do something as insane as trash your old profile during an upgrade, so I had it uninstall the previous version and then had to rebuild my profiles from scratch in the new version.  This is a bit like if, every time you install an new version of Microsoft Word, it would delete or be incompatible with all the documents you ever created with the previous version.

This time I was smarter and left the old version installed.  However, I see no way to copy my profile to the new version.  I tried copying all the files in %APPDATA%\cura\4.3 to %APPDATA%\cura\4.4, but none of my profiles showed up and it gave me a dialog box saying my MK3 profiles were corrupt and would I like to reset everything.

I'm frankly baffled that in 2020 software with this bad of an upgrade flow can exist.  Does anyone have advice on how to transfer my profiles?  Otherwise I will stick with Cura 4.3 and never try to upgrade it again.  I should mentioned that I'm running on Windows 10.

Thanks.

Well one thing this is not is a Cura support forum.

Maybe try on the Ultimaker support site?

And is there a reason you do not use PrusaSlicer - which is supported?

The Cura support forums are hosted on the Ultimaker site as @robert-rmm200 notes. They have a very active community. I've not had this problem since the upgrade from v3x to 4x myself. Depending in what version you upgraded from, there may be limits. In any cases there's lots of discussion and support there.

My post came across as sort of unwelcoming. We have a lot of Prusa users that use Cura, so you might get some good feedback from them.

My point was that Cura has an actual support site as @bobstro mentioned - and they can provide better assistance.

Thanks.  I realize that this is not the Cura forum, but I figured since a lot of Prusa users use Cura, someone may be able to help me.  Additionally, it's possible that my problem is related to the Prusa profiles.  I'm getting the following error message when I start up Cura 4.4.  I will check out the Ultimaker forums though.

Well maybe that we can help with.

Cura has changed the way they handle profiles, so old ones may not work.

Make sure you are at least this current:

Robert,

Thanks.  However, I did all of that when I setup my profiles in 4.3. Do I have to re-do it every time I upgrade Cura?

Sounds like Cura may have changed profiles again in 4.4.

Their tech support forum is the place to ask that question.

If they did - post that information in the topic I linked.

Not every time, but when you do, it's up to the Cura development team. I repeated the Prusa instructions for installing their profiles under Cura sometime around 4.3 IIRC and the profiles have carried forward to 4.5beta. If you're following Cura development releases, they may use a different profile structure to deliberately avoid over-writing older configurations. Details will vary depending on exactly what release you install. Again, the Cura forums are the best place to get these details and easily identify work-arounds. You should also be able to find guidance there on backing up profiles before upgrades and restoring to a new release. I keep a version or two back when testing the betas.

Ok guys,  I think I figured out the issue.  When a new version of Cura installs it seems to transfer the Prusa printer definitions in "resources\definitions" and the mesh definitions in "resources\meshes", but it doesn't transfer the extruder definition in "resources\extruders".  After installing Cura 4.4, I manually copied the file "Original_Prusa_i3_MK3S_MK3_extruder_0.def.json" into "resources\extruders" and when I started Cura 4.4, it came up fine with all my profiles intact.  Has anyone else encountered this?  It seems to have happened to me twice now (every time I upgraded cura).

RE: How to transfer profile from old version of cura into new version

Have not had that exact problem, and have upgraded 4.x several times. However, Cura is very picky about the config files, and if there's an error, seems to want to wipe everything out. I was trying to decipher the configs Prusa uses and must've got something wrong. I wiped the Cura 4.5beta config directory and tried again and it brought over my 4.4 configs.

The longer I use PrusaSlicer, the harder it is to go back to the others. Right now, ironing is the only thing that pulls me back.

Thanks. I prefer Prusa slicer as well. However I found it doesn’t do supports as well as Cura for complex shapes like miniatures or other organic looking objects. In PS I often have the supports fail (either because they’re too flimsy and wobble or because there’s not enough contact area to the object), while in Cura they never do.
