Troubles connecting and flashing. When I plug in the USB cable, the PC (Win 10) recognizes the port and the Prusa does a reset. Cannot access through pronterface orS3d either.

Updated drivers.
Factory Reset Completed.

Thoughts?

Finished assembling the Kit a couple of days ago and did all the calibrations. Do I need to run anything after updating the firmware?

The first post in this thread does not mention the need to do anything special (besides LA correction) after the update. Looked at https://help.prusa3d.com/l/en/article/r5ByKgVm69-firmware-upgrade-and-flashing and http://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/Upgrading+firmware+v1.2/66 and they also do not mention anything special.

I always do a factory reset after a firmware upgrade. I've been looking through the commits in the Github repo, and I've seen several that mention minor changes to the layout of things in EEPROM, so it just seemed wise to reset and start from fresh. It may not be needed, but since I want to do a recalibration anyway, it's not like I am losing anything.


PS: Is Octopi supported? Read on Facebook Prusa group to not use it with 3.2.0 since it affects the prints

I've been using it, and while it works, I am seeing some strange artifacts. I'm actually going to try again today without it and see what happens.

Go to Window Device Manager and see what port Prusa is really connecting at. I had to change the updater to the correct USB COM port to get it to work. Rescan just shows all available ports and doesn't necessarily pick the correct one.

I had the same issue. Just kept retrying, turning the printer off and on between attempts. Third time worked.

Also get communication errors now and then connecting to Octoprint. Same process resolves that as well.

More and more people are reporting the same issue with the “too weak” extruder motor on the prusa facebook page …

I don’t understand why they decreased the current of the E-motor instead of just telling the people to untighten the screws for the bondtech gears …. 😯

Agreed... I've been saying for weeks now that the factory instructions for tightening those idler bolts is wrong and way too tight, but get nothing but grief from the internet thugs. I have mine adjusted to just a half turn after the bolt makes solid contact with the spring.

That said, I was running RC2 when the extruder current was even weaker, and never had any issues. It did seem to run a lot cooler then, now it's maybe a bit cooler with the general release but not as cool as RC2.

That's about how tight mine are. I check to see if the filament can skip while tugging on it and holding the idler in place with a small plastic probe. It grips just fine, but it's much looser than the assembly instructions show.

Any idea where the extruder current setting is in the source code? Is it just a single value?

EDIT: Never mind, I found it. It is in the file you copy over to Configuration_prusa.h, Firmware/variants/1_75mm_MK3-EINSy10a-E3Dv6full.h. Look for these lines:

#define TMC2130_CURRENTS_H {16, 20, 35, 30} // default holding currents for all axes
#define TMC2130_CURRENTS_R {16, 20, 35, 30} // default running currents for all axes

And then you would change the last value from 30 to something else. 36 was the value used in 3.2.0RC1.

MY EXPERIENCE: Z Calibration, Back to the Drawing Board after 3.2 Upgrade

Was running my prints doing well on my MK3 and finally decided to upgrade to the 3.2 firmware today. I had read about the successes and the issue with using initial calibration so I thought I would give it a try.
The upgrade went well and after it completed successfully I started the calibration wizard. It completed the "auto home", self test ok, but started having trouble when it got to the first of four calibration point on the print bed.
It would always fail and not go on to the second point or complete a calibration. I talked with online chat and they said to reload 3.2. I went through those steps, but it was no good.
I thought something was wrong because when it was trying to go through the first calibration point on the left front part of the bed it "MAID LOUD NOISES" kind of like grinding.

It didn't touch or hurt the sheet, but I thought something was wrong so I re-flashed. This did no good because it failed with the same results. Talking to the online chat I was told it couldn't find the bed because the PINDA was too high and I needed to lower it.
Well that went back and fourth with the same failure. I thought I was getting too close to the bed so I parked the print head, took the print sheet off and manually dropped the nozzle to the print bed and calibrated the height by using the manual zip tie method.

I re-flashed the MK3 with the older code 3.1.3 and was able to calibrate with only one issue, but that's for another post.

So, lets start over. I deleted the files I had downloaded, went online and downloaded the files again. "Yes, both times I had the correct file for MK3. I flashed the printer and started the calibration routine again, which failed at the same point.
This happened three times with me putting 3.2 on my printer and all three times it failed. Each time I flashed back to 3.1.3 I had no problem.
Each time I down graded to 3.1.3 there were no loud noises during the calibration. All nice and quiet. Each time I tried 3.2 I had the loud noises during the first calibration point.

So I guess I'll wait until they fix 3.2. I could recreate the test and record the noises and the failure if PRUSA would like the information. I'm not sure how large the file would be.

From my experience to get through the calibration wizard on 3.2.0

  • Calibration XYZ you have to lower the PINDA to get through without grinding/crashing into the bed

  • Live adjust Z just spin it to whatever your previous value was and accept no matter how bad it looks

  • Reset PINDA to its original position

  • Run calibrate Z live adjust

  • Repeat 4 until Z is set
  • Unfortunately this is the only way to get through the Calibration Wizard until the wizard is fixed.

    Thanks, but I don't know if I'll try it again for awhile. Why that grinding at the first calibration point? After messing with my Z so much between firmware testing I've got it at -1.3 I think. Shouldn't it between about -0.600 to -0.800?
    I spent an hour chasing the rabbit trying to get the PINDA probe set right. As I said I even went back to the manual method of one zip tie height.

    When I'm at -1.300 on the Z setting I forget which way to go with the probe, up or down. The manual doesn't appear to have it and when I asked online chat which way to turn the probe to lower it I'm told those are threads on the probe, just evenly spaced rings that look like threads.

    How do you do a factory reset? I went through the options twice and through support and calibration three times, but couldn't find it.

    They are actually threads the most you should turn the PINDA is a quarter turn though. Any more than that and you risk damaging the wires from the PINDA.

    If you need to raise or lower the PINDA more than that you will need to:-

  • Fully loosen the screw that locks the PINDA in place

  • Gently prise the PINDA holder open with a flat screwdriver

  • Push the PINDA up to reduce live Z or down to increase live Z. Only move one thread at a time

  • Remove the screwdriver

  • Re-tighten the PINDA locking screw.

    To illustrate the impact the lower extruder current in 3.2.0 is having, I printed out two Benchy's. In the attached photos, the photo on the left / top was printed with 3.2.0 firmware. The photo on the right / bottom was printed with this firmware with one small change I made to raise the extruder current back to 36, the value it was in 3.2.0RC1. In both pairs of photos, I've circled an area where there is a significant extrusion problem.

    Likewise, installed 3.2 no problem and it just worked.... well actually better, as the nozzle was a bit clearer from the bed during 9 point... Printing beautifully so far.

    So because of the issues with calibration in 3.2 you don't do calibration after updating? Sounds like you're giving up more than what you're getting... I don't as I'm still new at this, but I would think calibration is important.
    Will have to play with that once I'm finished with the current prints.

    Serial Port problems seem to be back; trying to print the ECOR tower, I ran into three transmission glitches (first time trying to print through OctoPrint on my RasPi Zero connected via serial port; just got stuck 49% through -- second and third times just trying to transfer the ECOR gcode file to SD through OctoPrint). Terminal specifically showed an '*X Buffer Full' (sorry, don't recall if RX or TX) message during one of the gcode transfers.

    This was on release 3.2.0 after doing a full 'All Data' factory reset and recalibration with 3.2.0-rc2 (I have not yet done an All Data wipe with the release version.)

    Just wanted to give a head's-up. I'll be putting a RPi 3 in shortly, so won't be testing the serial port any more.

    I had today issues when printing with new firmware.

    I did LinearAdvance

    I did Extruder linearity correction

    Than i started print - was printing approx. 3 hours (unfortunately 9 Y crashes) , but when I came to the printer - both heatbed and HE was set to 0°C and printer was printing to the air (extruder was not jammed, when I preheated PLA i was able to get out filament). When I wanted to re-insert filament, filament sensor was not working, reset did not helped - I needed to turn of the printer, than it was able to detect filament sensor.

    Seems firmware is not so good.
