Filament help needed.

My father is buying my daughter (17) her first 3D printer an i3 MK3S but we dont know enough to ask the right questions.

What type filament should we buy first setting up and learning and what would we need for advanced printing.

Thank you,

Doug H.

I would buy a good PLA and a sample of cleanign filament.

I like Paramount Cadet Blue.  It is very forgiving.  For cleaning filament, consider buying Novamaker.

the cleaning filament is not 100% needed.  I have found running a few inches through after filament chnages will reduce jams and keep you printing longer.

Start out with PLA and when you feel more confident, try PETG:)

Happy Printing:)

If you are here in the States, both Hatchbox and Paramount PLA are widely available (Amazon, etc.) and are as easy to print as anything.  Since the pandemic hit, some filaments have been in short supply, but that appears to be easing up lately.

The machine will come with a spool of a silver-gray Prusa filament which is also well behaved, and can be second sourced through the FilamentPM USA online store.

I would also recommend reading the manual very thoroughly in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'advanced printing', but either of the two above brands in PLA will print very impressive models on the MK3S.

If you are lucky to have what's known as a 'makerspace' or 'technology cooperative' in your area, they may offer some hands-on classes in the basics and more advanced aspects of 3d printing.  Some community colleges do as well, and if you are totally new, these will definitely be helpful.

The original Prusa filaments (Prusament PLA, PETG) from internal production are for example well adapted to the Prusa printers.

If you are in the US give Atomic Filament a shot, https://atomicfilament.com/.   I have been using them pretty much exclusively.  Prints really well, wide selection of colors, free shipping and they ship fast.
