Z axis nightmare >_

Hello,

I really need some help with this, I’m actually pulling my hair out. My z axis goes up smooth as anything, woosh. Then on the way down the left side seems to go further down than the right, but it’s only on the way down.

Things I’ve tried

I’ve taken it apart and put it back together.
I paid for two new motors replacing  both of them.
Tried tightening the X belt.
Checking the rods in the x are all the way in and z.
I switched the cables for the two motors. However it’s still the left.
Tightening the trapezoid nuts, loosening the trapezoid nuts, loosening and tightening everything.

Still no luck 🙁

so so sad.

i bought this a while ago from a reseller so sadly there’s no hope for a refund.

I have no clue what to do.

any help would be bc amazing.

thank you

Not sure what the support situation is, but if this was a new purchase, I would think you're eligible for Prusa support. Can you log into the online store and try chat?

@bobstro

As it was an unofficial reseller, I don’t thinks there’s much they can do. The reseller now is out of business so I don’t even have a contact there ether.

I am just at a loss as what to do next.

No matter where you bought it, if it's a genuine Prusa machine I'm sure Chat support will try to help. (use live chat not email)

Given that you've replaced both motors, and tried swapping the cables, it has to be something about the top Z axis mounts, or the X gantry.

Something you could try.  Wrap a piece of tape around both Z axis lead screws, right above the motor. Now, move the Z axis to zero and make a mark on the tape on both sides.  You want the mark to be front, center on the rod.  A little mismatch on the two sides is fine, be as careful as you can.  Now, move the Z axis up to almost the top.  You don't want to hit the top supports though.  Note where the marks are on each side.  If both motors turned the same amount, the marks should be in the same relative position.  Now move the Z axis back to zero.  If the motors move the same amount, the marks should be both in the same relative position and facing front and center.

If there is a difference in amount the two motors moved, then the left side is missing steps for some reason.  Since it's not electrical, it would have to be something mechanical, on the left side.  Either the top rod holder or the X gantry.  You might check the inside of the top rod holder for rough patches or burrs.  It's possible the lead screw could be catching something.

I know you said you tighten and loosened the trapezoid nuts, but have you taken them off and inspect the "threads" inside ?
