First time user running into a filament jam?

Hi,

My pre-assembled Prusa i3 MK3S+ arrived and I followed the prompts on-screen. The calibration went smoothly with no issues.

However, trying to remove the test print filament section (that was already in the printer) is where I ran into my first problem. The 'remove filament' part of the sequence didn't work. It heated up, beeped, but even with moderate force I wasn't able to remove it.

Then, I tried going to the main menu and selecting 'remove filament', and that did not work either. I tried a third time and the filament line came out (felt like it snapped), but I suspect the clog remains.

Trying to load a new filament won't work. I can feel it getting gripped, and it loads in a bit but then chugs over and over. Nothing comes out.

As a first-time user this is very demoralizing heh, and I could use your help with clear instructions about what I should do next. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

RE: Keep holding the button down.

I had similar issues when I got my pre-assembled MK3S+ a couple of months ago. What I didn't get was that you have to hold the button down, not just press it. For unloading, when it beeps, grab hold of the filament above the extruder and get ready to pull. Then press and hold the button next to the display screen and keep holding it until the filament unloads and comes all the way out of the top. You may need to pull firmly. Same thing for loading. When it says loading is active, hold the button down and keep holding it down as you gently push the filament into the top. (Also be sure to cut your filament at a 45 degree angle). When the extruder senses the filament it will start pulling it down and thats when you let go of the button.  When I finally got this, I never had any problems. If your nozzle really is clogged, you can unclog it with the acupuncture needle that is included.  If the load filament doesn't work, I do another unload, even if there is nothing to unload and then try the load again and this has worked every time. I hope this helps.

re: keep holding the button down

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I guess that wasn't clear to me when I was reading the instructions.

So, I'll keep that in mind for the next load, but now unfortunately I am past that point. The filament is snapped off but the nozzle is clogged. Can't load new filament, and nothing comes out of the nozzle when heated. Any ideas?

Acupuncture needle?

Did you try the acupuncture needle? There are instructions in the handbook.

Knowledge Base Article

I haven't had to do any of these procedures, so I have no direct experience, but here is the article. You might have a clogged PTFE tube. https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/clogged-nozzle-hotend-mk3s-mk2-5s_2008

Got it working!

Thanks for all the ideas!

I turned up the temp to 260 (since I have PLA), let it sit for a few min, and then used the needle as suggested here. This time I could feel more give in the needle so I tried again and felt it 'break through' where there wasn't much resistance anymore and I could see thin trails of plastic come out when I pulled the needle out.

From there, I tried feeding in more filament and initially it was slipping but then it started pulling in, and finally I got extruded PLA out of the nozzle!

I believe that wraps it up for now. I will attempt initial prints and see how that goes. Thanks again everyone-
