First Print Issues

Hey, everyone!

I managed to assemble my MK3S - went through the callibration and self tests and all.

I printed models from the SD card that was provided - specifically 'Benchy' and 'Vase', I ran into some issues!

I'm not sure what this could be which is why I'm here, it is as if its not layering properly and creating these extruded lines horizontally.

Live-Z is too high (needs to be more negative, by a lot); and looks like a loose belt or drive gear for those higher up issues.

Cal-Circles

Flat First: Drive gears must be tightened flat-first.

1)   Start with both set screws fully loosened so the pulley is free to spin on the motor shaft.

2)   Align one set screw dead center with the flat on the motor shaft, slowly tighten the screw until it fully contacts the flat surface.

3)   Torque the flat set screw to spec.

4)   Now tighten the jam set screw, and torque it to spec.

Once tightened, never touch the flat set screw unless the jam screw is first fully loosened.

Why Flat First? Set screws have flat ends. If you tighten the jam screw first the set screw on the shaft flat doesn't fully contact the shaft, only one small edge of the screw surface is biting. Reversing torques can easily shift the shaft to a position the flat screw no longer contacts the shaft. This lets the jam screw wriggle loose. And after a while, vibration loosens the screws until the gear is free to rotate.

UPDATE -

I’ve managed to correct my errors and fix the problem –

I believe the main culprit behind all the issues I found was the Y-axis motor and idler pulley mounts were not fully secured and therefore produced a slight wobble.

Furthermore, I removed and greased my bearings and fully washed my PEI smooth plate with Fairy (Dawn, if u like) and water + IPA after.

After all of this and some time spent trying to perfect my live Z-axis adjustment, I printed my 4th Benchy.

It came miles better than any other I printed before, without any visible issues and pretty much perfect.

Thank you for all the advice and information!

Congrats!

Just one comment though. IPA after detergent scrub is self-defeating. You are more likely contaminating the surface with the IPA.

Water scrub - done. Leave it like that until you think the surface needs cleaning. Then use IPA, and IPA again after every couple of prints.

Use water and detergent maybe monthly to get off residuals. Then go back to your IPA cycle.

Rinsing with IPA after a wash is likely just making the bed dirty again.  IPA has the fantastic ability to wick through cleaning materials like paper towels and reach your fingers as you scrub. At your fingers it picks up oil and carries it back to the bed, when the alcohol evaporates and leaves the oils behind.  Unless you have a huge cloth or several paper towels, or wear gloves, leave the alcohol in the bottle.

ps: just read Robert's reply ... so should have just said "Ditto" ... lol

Thank you for that information, previously had to use tape and glue stick, this removable bed is very new to me.
