Curious OBJ / STL slicing differences

This was my first end-to-end project from Fusion 360 to my MK3. I was all excited to try the built in OBJ export functionality in Fusion. After a clean import into Slic3r PE and a stock slicing (just with a different infill pattern at 15%), I noticed that the chamfer along the outside has a rather odd serration/tessellation on its surface. This was not part of the initial model nor did it show in the overview of the object in Slicer pre-slicing. I went ahead and printed it out to see if this was real, or just an artifact of the OBJ import:

Even the surfaces were a bit rougher than objects in STL format I've sliced in the past.
However, this effect is neat if desired, and I'd have no idea how to model it if I had to!

Now, from the exact same model in Fusion, I do an STL export and go through the same process as above. After slicing, the chamfer surface appears continuous as expected:

That surface is smooth as buttah!

Questions moving forward:

  • Is this due to a defect in the OBJ export of Fusion or an import/slicing issue with our Slicer? I'm happy to get all intermediate files for this to Prusa Engineers for analysis if it would help.
  • Is this an expected behavior/deficiency inherent with OBJ formats?
  • If there are knobs to tweak that are deeper in Slicer to resolve this, I'd be interested in knowing what they are.

    Hi Martin,

    looks like the top picture is produced at a lower quality / lower polygon setting.... I have never used the .obj export so can't help further!
