That front fan being misplaced is probably what is causing the problem.  This is an original plain MK3, no S or + correct?

YESSSS, the front fan being misaligned was totally the cause. THANKS ALL! This has been the best forum experience I've ever had.

I say this was mostly successful because it still wants to put these two little bumps in the upper right of the print. These can likely be alleviated with further calibration (maybe?), but I haven't been able to nail it yet.

Now that you have rotated the side fan you might want to verify it's blowing air into the extruder. Not blowing away from it. I know the sticker should face in but it seems funny they would have assembled it backwards at the factory.

Those bumps are usually where the top layer is warping in relation to the infill.  Make sure the part (front) fan is well and truly aligned.  Maybe post another couple of photos of the extruder now it's in place.

It looks a lot better now, and should have solved the problems with that top layer. Is the heatsink fan blowing towards the heatsink now by the way?

Which model have you got the old plain MK3? MK3S? or MK3S+? Only asking as I though they all had a bracket and second bolt to hold that part cooling fan in place.

Actually looking at the photos and the assembly guide it looks like just one screw was used back then.  Probably why the fan became dislodged!

So as long as that heatsink fan is the right way round now then is should definitely be able to print the demo files without problems.

If you, or anyone else, wants a quick and dirty way to check the fan then set the printer to pre-heat (Eg. PLA) and hold a sheet of 1-ply toilet paper about 1 cm in front of the heatsink fan.  It should be sucked against the fan NOT blown away from it. Only let it rest there for a second or you'll overheat.

Can confirm the heatsink blows the right way now.

Still getting that minor bubbling/pillowing, but I'll mess with the Z height and stuff.
