Argh! It keeps asking me to unload and reload the filament

I had a jam, which I seem to have cleared. It seems to be printing fine (no clicking like before), but then the MK3 suddenly stops, moves over to the side, and asks me to remove the filament. After I do, it asks me to reload it. Fine, I do. It goes back to printing for about another short while, then it repeats the unload-reload requests, which I do again. Then again, and again. It's not clicking. It seems to be extruding and printing just fine. What is causing this, and how do I fix it?

Mine was doing that same thing yesterday with Prusa orange PET. I turned off the lights above the printer and disabled the filament sensor.... finished without a hitch.
I have always had a problem with the Prusa orange PET on MK3... I don't know if it's the brightness of the color, or the reflection from light off the filament- I still have to run more tests.
That particular color(for me) is the only one I have had to switch the sensor off to print sucessfully

You're a genius! I disabled the sensor, and now it works perfectly.

What is wrong with this sensor? Do I need to replace it, or is it something else?

I believe it's a mixture of the fact that the sensor is extremely sensitive 😯 , and the firmware settings are not quite right....honestly I don't know

What color/type of filament were you experiencing problems with?
Do you have bright lights above your printer?
What version FW are you running?

No bright lights here.
I'm running firmware 3.2.0
I had the problem with both grey Prusa PLA and with this white PETG ( http://a.co/iakXSRL ), which I'm currently printing with the filament sensor off.

Re: Argh! It keeps asking me to unload and reload the filament

I suppose it's possible that in 3.2.0 PR increased the sensitivity of the sensor, and the brighter filaments make it believe is has run out of filament?
Since those colors are smooth and bright.... it makes me wonder.

I'm going to drop back to 3.1.3 and see if the problem persists and report back. I will say I did not have this issue as much with 3.2.0RC1

Just a wild guess, but my hunch is that it has something to do with the itty bitty teflon tube at the filament entrance port to the extruder. That's near the filament nsensor, and the filament sensor reports an error if it's missing. Mine became deformed.

Looks like there's a new firmware 3.2.1 out now: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/releases

I actually replaced that tiny PTFE tube with Capricorn tubing, still chamfered on both sides.... I haven't noticed any difference.

How did you chamfer it? I have some replacement Teflon tubing arrivig today from Amazon, but it won't be chamfered, whereas I notice the itty bitty teflon tube that came with the kit is chamfered. I suppose some kind of conical reamer might do it....

Yes- a reamer is the easiest way. https://www.harborfreight.com/household/plumbing/t-handle-reamer-66938.html
If you don't have one, and don't want to buy one you can do a decent job with a fine tipped hobby knife- just spinning the tube while cutting the inside corners

Well, I replaced the PTFE tube with a new chamfered one, and it made no difference.

Argh! I've done several successful prints now with the filament sensor turned off. However, if I turn it back on, it immediately goes back into it's dysfunctional behavior. I think it must be defective. 😥

Re: Argh! It keeps asking me to unload and reload the filament

Have you checked the wiring from the sensor for breaks? I have seen where some folks have had a broken wire where the wiring is routed down the back of the extruder carriage. Also check the Einsy for a loose connector.... it happens sometimes.

Have you tried it yet?

For those that are experiencing problems are you setting the color of your filament in your favorite Slicer? Would the wrong color in this setting make it look for a certain hue?
If it's outside a certain range that it is expecting will this cause the issue?

Re: Argh! It keeps asking me to unload and reload the filament

I am getting this behavior too. Haven't used my Mk3 in about ~3 months.. (still on Firmware 3.1.1) but never saw this behavior previously.

Went ~6 hours or so into a big print before happening for the first time, noticed it when I came home from work, and it has happened 5 times in the last hour now. Using eSUN PETG (solid silver color).

The print I am in the middle of has a thick top layer (6 layers) and the top surface starts horizontal but transitions to a vertical surface (see photo). When the top was more horizontal, things were printing pretty conventionally.. but now in the vertical section (if you can follow this description) it does the typical two-layers in the wall, and then makes up for the extra "inner" wall thickness with an extremely fast back and forth zigzag pattern. This makes the printer vibrate excessively. Every time I have noticed the print pausing to ask me to re-load, it happens during this high vibration portion. Looking at the layer visualization in slicer.. this zigzag is might tighter in the section now being printed than in the earlier (more horizontal) portions. I am thinking the vibes have something to do with it, falsely tripping the filament sensor.

I have deactivated that sensor and will continue to monitor for the next few hours..

You can speed down this zigzag infill in slic3r :

Print Settings
Speed
Speed for print moves
Gap fill

or reduce the print speed on the LCD, during a print!
