Are these normal noises? (MK3S Kit)

Dear community, I assembled my MK3S kit some days ago and after struggling quite some time with the Z alignment I think I am finally there.

But I was wondering if maybe you can help me understand if these noises are  normal, especially the one that sounds like an old matrix printer

Any tips you may have to reduce sound would be awesome. I already placed a rubber base to the printer, thinking on adding another layer to see if it gets better but I am worried about the noises that are still there :/

You can check the sounds on this video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/p6dtPHogjTFLcqn8A

Thank you for your support!

Fernando

This sounds awfully familiar to the resonating noises coming from my brand new kit too. I tracked the noise down to the psu and it only happens in  a particular feed range. when i upped the speed past 160% it stopped. Yours seems to be on x moves however mine always seemed to be Y moves. was going to try and have a play with y belt tension at some point to see if that does anything.

Hey, thanks for your comments. I noticed that if I hold the frame on the top the noise was greatly reduced, but I am not sure how to get rid of it permanently :/

Definitely sounds like something resonating.  Now, you won't ever get rid of some amount of sound at certain movement speeds and directions.  The print bed makes a pretty good transducer at certain frequencies.  Since yours appears to be X movement related, I would start with the power supply and/or the electronics enclosure.  With the X carriage moving at a speed that makes a lot of noise, start touching and pressing on surfaces and you will likely find one that makes the noise almost completely stop.  That's your culprit.  Now, fixing it is a whole separate discussion.

The following G code will sweep the X axis back and forth at increasing speed.  Make note of which is the loudest and then you can created a file that just sweeps the x axis back and forth at that speed to help you find your vibrating part.

G28 X0 ;home the X axis
G1 Y100 F4000 ;move up on the Y axis to give some room
;now start sweeping the X axis at increasing speeds
G1 X250 F1000
G1 X0 F1500
G1 X250 F2000
G1 X0 F2500
G1 X250 F3000
G1 X0 F3500
G1 X250 F4000
G1 X0 F4500
G1 X250 F5000
G1 X0 F5500
G1 X250 F6000
G1 X0 F6500
G1 X250 F7000
G1 X0 F7500
G1 X250 F8000
G1 X0 F8500

Thanks for sharing the test code.

Somehow this sound was only happening in a specific sort of movement, now I am printing something else and its not happening anymore....very strange...

Today I am printing with woodfill filament and the printer is making other sort of noises.... I am puzzled....

It is your LCD holder and part cooling fan that are rattling at certain speeds/movement. I had the same issues and used hot clue the fix the noise coming from the LCD holder, I replaced that part cooling fan with one from LDO. It is quiet ever since.

Another print, another strange noise....I am starting to believe this is normal....

I believe the dot matrix sound is normal. It’s generated by the stepper motors under certain movements.

The clicking in your latest video - could it be the filament slipping? Maybe tighten the idler? Is the hot end hot enough for the filament you’re using?

@fscheps

That's the extruder gears stripping.  Either the extruder idler is too loose or its too hard to force the filament through the nozzle at the rate needed.  This could be for any number of reasons -- nozzle too cold, nozzle to small for the filament being used, printing to fast, etc.  I'm actually fighting a the same issue with Prusament Pearl Mouse right now.

Since you are printing with a wood-fill filament, I would expect you would either need to move up to a 0.6mm nozzle, or slow way down and/or print hotter.  The wood in the filament is going to make it much harder to force melted filament through the nozzle.  I would also expect that a wood filled filament will be slower to melt as the wood will act as an insulator.

So yeah, you were right, the filament was not moving and when watching the nozzle it was in the air flying around. It took some work, the woodfill filament was swished and the extruder was quite blocked. I had to push from the top with a steel wire with the hot extruder to remove all stuck filament....What a nightmare....at least I didnt have to disassemble the whole thing. I guess these are the times when I am glad I bought the kit, as I now understand where the problems might be.

This was the piece of filament that was blocking everything.

One more print another strange noise, can somebody be so kind to please hear if this is normal?

The buzz as the head and bed move are completely normal.  The movement speed happens to be one that resonates loudly.  There is another noise, right at the beginning of the video that I couldn't identify.  Almost like a squeaky clicking.  The intensity dropped as the camera moved parallel with the bed.  It was still barely audible as you zoomed in on the print piece, but seemed to go away as you came back out on the whole extruder.

Yeah, that is the strange noise that caught my attention on this piece. Based on the print, do you think I need to adjust more the Z level? Could it be the nozzle touching the print?

@fscheps

Try putting some slight pressure on the fan rotor hub while it's spinning and de x-axis is moving, you will notice a difference.

@fscheps

Hard to say.  It did appear to coincide with the extruder changing direction.  Unless the print has separated from the bed, the nozzle won't really run into the print on a thin, flat piece like that.  I looked, the print appeared well adhered.  What you really need to do is determine the general area of the printer that the sound is coming from.  Then you can look at the moving bits in that area.  For example, it it is coming from the right hand side of the printer and corresponds to the X axis changing direction, I would say you need to check the X axis idler pulley and make sure it spins freely.  If there were a little contact with the surrounding mount, you could be hearing the plastic/aluminum grab and squeek slightly as the pulley stops moving and reverses direction.  If it corresponds to the Y axis changing direction, then check the bearings and Y axis idler.

One of the biggest sources of noise on my printer is actually the filament itself.  Certain filaments -- crystal clear PLA being the worst -- tends to squeak if it rubs against the filament sensor cover as it enters the print head.  It also tends to make noise in the feed through of my enclosure.

The sounds that mean trouble are generally loud clicks, thumps, squeaks/squeals and scratchy sounds.  You've heard what the extruder gears skipping sounds like.  At some point you will get to hear the sharp click of the nozzle hitting a part that has curled up of the bed.

Thanks for your comments. Today I am hearing loud noises again and I can sense the frame vibrating quite a bit, some of those noises get lowered when I hold and press down the frame for instance.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/8VzFmiESEFup6TPo7

Are you able to identify where these loud sounds may come from? I was hoping that the 2 cm rubber base I placed the printer on would help reduce these sounds. I might try the cement plate in addition, but I am a bit afraid of the weight of it on my furniture.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

@fscheps

Those are rather normal and come for the fact that the printer uses stepper motors to move the print head.  At certain speeds the frame and bed will resonate.  Notice how it only does it some times?  Also notice how the the print head is moving faster when it does it?  It's printing the inner perimeters faster than the outer and makes noise during the inner perimeter.  I would check the screws holding the display to the frame and make sure they are very well tightened.  When I built my kit, I had a nasty vibration in the display housing.  I had tightened it down to what I thought was tight, but it turned out it wasn't.  It took a good bit of force to really tighten those screws around.

Other than that, it's gonna make noise when it moves fast.  There are things you can do to help reduce the noise -- anti-vibration base, enclosures, and slowing down high speed movement.

Thanks a lot! I hope we are building a thread to help others identify the noises out of their MK3S 🙂
I am getting stable prints since I started using Isopropyl alcohol before every print 🙂
