Bed crash after print pause

This was on firmware version 3.4.1 just after upgrading from MK2 to MK2.5 with my brand new spring, powder coated sheet.

I was printing the first layer of a print when the extruder gear was slipping. So I wanted to pause the print, unload the filament to check for issues. I also used the Move Axis option to raise the extruder so I could clean the hot end and stick one of those acupuncture needles up in there to make sure it was clear.

Then, when the print resumed, the nozzle crashed into the bed, scraping the new sheet.

Is this type of process I used not supported? I get moving the z-axis could cause it to get out of calibration, but I moved it with the controls, so I'd think it would always know where it was accurately, no?

It is not that smart yet. I suspect.
