MK2.5s Whining Z-Axis stepper

Good Evening, I have a MK2 that's been upgraded to a 2.5s, that has been whining on its right stepper motor all the time, and it stays hot, usually about 90-110 degrees. depending on the movement of the Z height, the whine changes in pitch. I have replaced the stepper, but that has not resolved the issue, so its probably a stepper drive issue I think. Any suggestions?

Its been a year... no suggestions? And by whining I mean a very high pitched whine, like an old CRT TV set to a black screen or something. And the temps are 40-50c I have remeasured it, and some times I cant even touch it it gets so hot just sitting there.

Hi Charles.

I believe there have been firmware upgrades in the last 12 months, have you applied them to your printer?

Latest firmware 3.9.1

Have you considered adjusting your motor current?

I have

M83 ; extruder relative mode
M907 E400 ; Reduce Extruder motor current

in my Start Gcode

this is on a Mk3S, I don't have a Mk2.5S

thank you for your time but I don't think that would resolve the issue, only one of them is making the noise and gets hot the other stays cold. besides, that would like turning silent mode on, and it already doesn't print well in silent mode.

Thanks Charles,
that command only addresses one of the motors
particularly the Extruder.

I hope you get a response that is more to your liking!

@charles-g

Hi Charles

Both Z axis motors plug into connectors right next to each other.  I thought that this meant they used the same driver, but?

My suggestion: swap the Z-axis connectors at the MiniRAMBO and see if the problem moves to the opposite Z stepper.

If the problem stays on the same side, the MiniRAMBO is probably OK.

If the problem moves to the other side, a problem on the MiniRAMBO is likely.

Good Luck!

@keri7240

that is a very good idea, I shall try that when I get off work.
