X-Axis belt broke

Well my X-Axis belt broke on my Prusa I3 MK2,
I am pretty sure when I assemble it it wasn't to tight and nothing got into the belt to jam it,
I am thinking just a bad belt which is just how it goes.

Picture of belt

I didn't see a replacement belts on the Prusa shop but I did find a belt that seems to be close but before I bought it I wanted to see if anyone knows if this is the correct belt

The Belt I found is a GT2 2mm pitch with a 6mm width.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F2IQNX8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1O72OR60FVTWO

Good news is before it broke I have printed over 3 days-18 hours and 914 feet of filament according to the printer
and I have made several prototypes for the machine shop I work for and models, its been a amazing machine and I have had fun with it
and will keep having fun with it when I get a new belt 🙂

Thanks for the help

Re: X-Axis belt broke

You want a replacement belt but in the mean time you could use zip ties as temporary fix depending on the location of the break.

Re: X-Axis belt broke

unfortunately the break is on the top about 2 inches away from the hot end hook up and any repairs would just jam on the motor mount for the X motor when it goes to home or zero the sensor.

good suggestion though if you have the room for it.

I don't mind waiting on a belt just need o make sure it the right one before ordering.

Re: X-Axis belt broke

Found a Gates belt that is supposed to be the same size as the one on the Prusa I3 MK2 X-Y drives

here are the links and part numbers for the Belt in case anyone wants them.
it is a belt that is roughly 45" or 1164mm long and will have to be cut to length.

Belt Details:
http://www.gatespowerpro.com/Comergent/en/US/adirect/gates?cmd=catProductDetail&removeNav=true&productID=94001582

Gates #:
Gates 1164-2MGT-06

where I bought mine at:
https://www.motionindustries.com/productDetail.jsp?sku=05694842

it should be in Wednesday and i'll post up here how it works.

Re: X-Axis belt broke

You need GT2 belt. That is GT3. I've bought it from e3donline, just buy some meters and then cut to desired size.

EDIT: oh don't mind, seems 2mm pitch? Maybe i don't how the nomenclature works 😕

yeah, that's the right one.
would be a good idea to put such a 5m piece in your spare parts box.

The one from Gates that I listed is supposed to be the same belt but its their newer version of the GT series so its supposed to be more durable longer lasting and more resistant to wear and tare.

its still a 2mm pitch with 6mm width but I will find out Wednesday and post the results here.
I ordered enough to replace both X & Y axis and have spare if needed only cost $25 with shipping

Well the Gates belt came in today and they are working perfectly, just had to cut to length which was easy.
I did replace both the X & Y axis, the Y was still good but I didn't want to risk it sense the X had broken and scrape a print.
I re ran the XYZ calibration just to be sure and printed the Prusa logo and and a few others and everything is back to normal.

Re: X-Axis belt broke

If the belt wasn't to tight it could just be a bad belt or something on the pulley or idler that damaged it, you can get basic replacement belt here https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F2IQNX8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1O72OR60FVTWO and cut to lenght,

I replaced my belts with this one https://www.motionindustries.com/productDetail.jsp?sku=05694842 , you will need to order 2 of them for X and Y axis , if you break this one then something is wrong with the machine or how it is installed.

Re: X-Axis belt broke

I ran across another supplier who ships free for orders of $20 or more which you will spend with the other folks who seem to all charge $10+ for shipping the belts. I paid $20 shipped for 3 of the 1.1M length belts. Just thought I would share it. I have heard that these belts are excellent. This is for US customers.
