Loud Noise from y-axis in one direction only.

Hi guys,

Just finished Calibration and printed my first piece. What a difference from my old Aliexpress/davinci! While the print looks great, the printer is exhibiting a fairly loud nasally 'grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" like sound when moving back on the y-axis. It only exhibits this under power, bed rolls cleanly with and without belt attached, and also tested for vibrations in various parts of printer during print. I've included a youtube video to help explain the sound. Apologies for the video sound being a bit noisy/muffled. It is difficult to capture the sound with the power supply fan running.

Also, should the cooling fan be running with the default gcode prints on the sd card?

I included a picture of the print.

Thanks!
Nick

So is this normal then? No responses from anybody....

I know that with my MK2, I found out that my Y axis rails weren't completely parallel. I checked them with a digital caliper to get them back to parallel. One thing I have noticed about this design is that the power supply brace can skew the alignment of the Y axis considerably.

Your issue sounds more like the nozzle rubbing against the part.

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

I've tweaked the z-axis higher than it should be during a print and the problem persist. The rails are parallel to .1mm. I'm going to try silent mode and see the difference. Thanks for the ideas.

Cheers,
Nick

I just tightened up my Y belt as it seemed a bit too loose before and now I have that horrible vibration sound coming from the bed. I redid XYZ and it said everything was aligned but I may just try loosening the belt one notch. Another thing I noticed is that the calibration lines from the V2Calibration gcode are slightly offset from the lines on the bed. They previously lined up perfectly.

The only solution is to check the geometry of Y-frame and make it perfect.

I suggest you try printing 2x of my Z-Frame corners. They may help make sure the Z-Frame is properly propped up when you realign your frame.

My printer makes the same noises. It seems to be specific to large, fast movements of the Y-carriage. I created a simple rectangle to give the printer time for a long movement. The noise seems to echo between the bed and the Y-carriage. At first, I thought maybe the screws between the carriage and bed had loosened, and the bed was vibrating, but the bed was tight. I also loosened the Y-carriage belt by two notches. No change in the sound (so I tightened it back up.

To date, the noise doesn't seem to visibly impact the quality of the prints, but when that noise happens, I can hear it upstairs, even though the door to the basement is closed.

I've ordered some IGUS bearings/bushings to see if they have an impact.

I'm having the same sound come from mine. Driving me nuts. I tightened all of the nuts since I thought that was the issue. Some of the noise seems to be from the power supply. If I hold it, the noise lessens. But there is another noise that I can't track down.

Almost guaranteed it's your bearings. The cheap bearings that come with the Mk2 just LOVE to vibrate.

I've found some high quality bearing options but most of them are too costly to reasonably justify. So far, here's the list of high quality bearings that I've found. Click the P/N for the OEM site, click the price to go somewhere and spend too much on them. The igus drylin bearings may be the best bet for most people. I've just ordered some and I'm going to compare them to others.

1. SKF LBBR8-2LS/HV6 : 19.52USD

2. KH08-PP : 15.77USD

3. VXB LM8UU : 10.37USD

4. igus drylin RJ4JP-01-08 : 1.99

I have the same problem and i suspect the bearings as well. Please keep us updated with your results 🙂

Re: Loud Noise from y-axis in one direction only.

I was looking around for loose parts and noticed my y-axis pulley was loose. I tightened it up and started a print. The noise is almost gone! I'm guessing the loose pulley was causing too much vibration.

A great point. Check for loose anything. If everything you can see is tight, then it's probably the bearings. 🙂

How loose is loose? I just replaced my bearings, and while Y-movements are noticeably quieter, I still get the long, loud "moan" on fast, lengthy Y movements. The wheel on my my Y-axis pulley spins freely. Maybe too freely? Is that where yours was loose?

Thanks for any additional info!

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same problem and it sounds exactly the same. It's also when moving only in one direction.

Re: Loud Noise from y-axis in one direction only.

Just fixed mine, noise completely gone after servicing the Y bushings.

I removed the bushings, flushed each bushing using canned brake cleaner. Gently blew out with compressed air (not too high of a pressure or you can remove the ball bearings).

Found some WD-40 brand "dry lubricant" at the local Walmart. This stuff is supposed to be a very thin lube that does not gather dust and dirt.
I think it is identical to a paraffin wax based motorcycle / bicycle chain lube that could be used as well. The idea is you flood the bushing wth the lube. 98% of the spray evaporates and leaves a very thin film. I did this several times to assure full lubrication.

Reassembled and ZERO Y noises (at least for now).

Jim
