Heated print chamber modification

I am new to 3D printing, I just started printing 4 to 5 days back. Last night I was printing a jewelry box using ABS for my wife and I experienced my first layer split. I am now considering putting the Prusa I3 MK2 inside an enclosed cabinet to trap the heat from the print bed inside and thus creating a heated chamber. Would this help make my ABS prints less prone to separating or would I need to add a small 20w incandescent bulb inside to create a little bit of warmth in the cabinet?

Or am I just over thinking the entire thing and there is a simpler solution to the problem that I have not thought off?

If you look in the improvements section, you will see many different enclosures which people use. Mainly used for keeping in the heat or reducing noise levels.

There is plenty of heat from the bed to prevent layer separation and warping.

Josef does not use enclosures in his farm as the room is kept at around 35 degrees and without drafts.

Thanks, I will try putting the printer in a smaller room where the heat from the printer will actually make the room itself warmer. There were no drafts in the room I was printing in, but the temperature was around 26 C

Re: Heated print chamber modification

If you want to know if it will help (my guess is it will) do a really quick experiment with a cardboard box upside down over the printer. If you want to see inside cut a hole and put some plastic wrap (or any other clear plastic you my have around) over a hole cut in the box and tape it in place. It doesn't have to be pretty, but it will tell you if it's the right solution, and you probably have the stuff around your house. If you're satisfied that it improves the print, then put something more robust together.

Excellent low cost method for testing

Re: Heated print chamber modification

I built a Box from six 60x60cm shelf-"plates" and two hinges. Buyed them in the homedepot and payed about 30eur. Just screw them Together drill a hole in the top for Filament input (3.5mm for 4mm PTFE hose) and your done. It doesnt matter when the box is not perfectly sealed as you just want to trap the heat a bit to reach about 35°C and stop unwanted airflow. Also reduces noise level a bit but not greatly. Otherwise with the anti vibration add on i cant hear the printer in the next room when it is in high power mode.

This discussion should really be moved to Prusa + Box

Dimensions PNG

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.
