Skirt consistently not sticking to bed

Hey all.

I've noticed that the skirt always leaves the first 20-30cm off the bed, then finally touches the bed and sticks for the rest of the skirt. This leaves a loose strand at the start of the skirt, which the nozzle invariably picks up and deposits into the print. Always happens. I ran 4 test prints tonight of a 1-layer rectangle to work on Z height, and it did the same thing every time. I took video this time. Does this sound like a filament issue? Can't be Z-height...I went from -.165 to -.050 in 4 steps. In all cases, the print itself was well-adhered to the bed, but that damned skirt keeps ruining the first layer. I thought it was filament-specific, but I tried another roll and same thing.

Skirts: Note that they all have the same basic issue.

Prints getting worse:

I've had that happen to me too. I did a full recalibration, swore, and then wiped the bed down carefully with 100% acetone (nail polish remover) after trying ethyl alcohol.

Between the re-calibration and the acetone, PLA stuck extremely well after that for me.

Just a guess here but those holes around the edge of your print makes me think your Z could be lowered a tad bit more.

Just a Thought,

Re: Skirt consistently not sticking to bed

Check your starting GCODE and remove/comment this line if it exists:

G1 E-4 F1000.0

Only for single color prints, MM should work out of the box.
Apparently not all Slicer versions have this issue, but it leads to the skirt starting too late because of the retract after the wipe.
Also it looks a bit underextruded (at least as far as one can tell with a damaged 1st layer). Have you corrected your filament diameter and calibrated extrusion multiplier?

Re: Skirt consistently not sticking to bed

Thanks, all. Great suggestions. I typically clean the PEI with 99% IA when I've touched it...I've read that using it too often may make the PEI brittle.

Neal: thanks. I am halfway through trying to find the best Z height adjustment. The calibration file that is provided really isn't that helpful...to me at least...so I'm doing the 20x30cm, single-layer rectangle approach, starting at my "best-guess" and moving in the direction which appears to be best.

Nils: Yes, I think I'll do another extruder calibration. The last time I checked was before I upgraded, and the measure was very close (within a couple mm). Since this is a new one, all bets are off, I guess. 🙂
The info about the GCODE you provided is very interesting. Am I understanding correctly that *if* that line exists, comment it out *only* for single-color prints on the MM? I've noticed that when I'm printing single-color the initial "wipe" or printer prep deposits a single stripe of filament starting about 120cm left of the front edge. I've seen nothing that indicates whether that's the normal behavior.

Is there anything else in Slic3r PE that I need to set when I'm doing single-color printing?

Re: Skirt consistently not sticking to bed

It depends on whether you're using the single print printer profile. If you do, just remove that line, update the profile and you're good forever.

If you use the MM profile for single printing, you also need to remove it but that might have some impact on the wipe tower (or maybe not, I haven't tried). Note that it doesn't print a wipe line around the tower, so if the pressure in the nozzle is still too high it could mess up Layer 1 and not properly stick.

Brilliant, Nils!!
That worked like a charm.
Now I'm convinced I need to sit down and learn what all the Gcodes mean and do!
Cheers,

Happy to help. This thing keeps coming up, clear indication nobody at PR reads this forum. It would be ridiculously easy to fix.

Re: Skirt consistently not sticking to bed

This may be related, but when i look at my gcode for the start script, i have something similar but not exact to what Nils pointed out.

i have these 3 that are similar:
G1 Y-3.0 F1000.0 ; prepare to prime <-- 4th to last line
G1 X60.0 E9.0 F1000.0 ; priming <-- 2nd to last line
G1 X100.0 E12.5 F1000.0 ; priming <-- last line

Would i want to comment any of these out, i feel im having the same issue as OP is/was having.

here is my full gcode start script:
M115 U3.0.7 ; use the latest firmware version
G28 W ; home all axes without mesh bed leveling
G80 ; run mesh bed leveling routine
G1 Y-3.0 F1000.0 ; prepare to prime
G92 E0 ; reset extrusion distance
G1 X60.0 E9.0 F1000.0 ; priming
G1 X100.0 E12.5 F1000.0 ; priming

from Simplify3D (I have never touched this)
