How to pull up PTFE tube to release jam?

I got a jam in hotend but can't pull up PTFE tube even though black ring is pushed down. How can I pull up PTFE tube? Should I use pliers to yank it out? I tried heating nozzle and inserted piano wire up nozzle with no luck. Is there a way I can extrude manually from the settings?

Remove the extruder fan completely. Heat to 240 degrees, wait a couple of minutes and you should be able to push filament through from the top.

When the filament starts to move and extrude, push a bit harder ant then pull out quickly.

Turn off heater and re-assemble.

Worked great thanks! I used a cut off piece of filament to push it down all the way. Tried pulling up but don't think that part made much of a difference. I think the key was to go to 240.


Remove the extruder fan completely. Heat to 240 degrees, wait a couple of minutes and you should be able to push filament through from the top.

Unfortunately, this method didn't work for me to clear my jam. I can't seem to force filament through, even with the hotend heated to 240 and the hotend fan disabled. There seems to be filament stuck in the PTFE tube about 2 cm into the PTFE tube. Any ideas on how to resolve my jam? I suspect I"ll need to disassemble my hotend.

Yes, that is possibly your best option. You may have filament stuck in a small gap between heat break and PTFE.

What I would do:

Follow instructions to remove nozzle - but just undo it half a turn. This will release the heat break from the heat block.
Remove the heat break from the heat block, along with the heat sink.
Try to remove the heat break from the heat sink - but be careful as it can break at the undercut.
Push down the black rung at the top and rey to remove the PTFE - if you have removed the heat break then you can try pushing the PTFE downwards.

Do not use sharp metal objects, just a bit of heat to get the filament out.

Check that the PTFE tube has the correct tapers and chamfer. Re-install the PTFE as I have suggested in the "Blockage Troubleshooting" thread.

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately, I had to go away on a business trip, so was unable to give this a try until now.

I can successfully remove the heat sink and heat break from the heat block, but I can't seem to remove the heat break from the heat sink. My guess is that there is plastic gluing the heat break to the heat sink.

Since I can't remove the heat break, I can't push the PTFE downward. I also can't seem to pull the PTFE upward.

Any further advice? Should I try heating the heat break to try to unglue it from the heat sink? I don't want to cause any damage, so I haven't tried it yet.

Well, I was able to remove the PTFE tube with more rigorous pulling. That ruined the top of the PTFE tube, but the bottom of the PTFE tube was ruined anyway by the jam that I encountered. I now have the replacement PTFE tube in place and hopefully I don't run into the same problem 😕

There is thermal paste between heat break and heat sink.

The thermal paste can harden and heating will not usually help.

Hopefully your new tubing will be OK.

I had filament stuck in the tube...( during it's 3rd ever print )  it would not budge trying the methods above.

I had to remove the hotend and replace the tube.  Even after removing the tube I can't get the filament to move through that tube..

New tube installed and printing again... so far ok.
