Thermal Runaway

I am getting Thermal Runaway on my MK2/s.  This is after many many successful prints.  The temperature of the hot end drops during the first 5 layers of a print.  I have the fan turned off for these layers so it's not cooling them.  What else can I try?  Or can I buy a new hot end?  This is a printer in my school and I need to get it fixed before the end of the school year.

RE: Thermal Runaway

does the temperature drop instantly, or more slowly?

if it's instant changes to below room temperature then you extruder thermistor is suspect, probably either broken wire or loose connector,,,

if the temperature depletes slowly, then it's probably your heater cartridge, again wire breaking or connector loose/faulty...
check the plug on the Minirambo printed circuit, first... it may be charred...  if so, consider changing the plug and socket, or soldering the wire to the back of the PCB.
If all is well,
Set your printer with the extruder at a safe height, say 60mm. then
PreheatforPLA.
Wait for your extruder to reach temperature.

then move the extruder across to the right hand side of the X axis, and leave it there for a short while.    Does the temperature start to drop?
If not try moving the extruder say 50mm left and watch... does the temperature drop?

by now you should have the extruder at the left hand side

hopefully you will have found your problem by now, if not, please let us know!
