X-axis belt rubbing on Idler issue and fix

Hey guys, I've been tracking down issues with my recently built MK2S and the latest one is that whenever the x axis switches direction, it produces a really high pitched squeak that is extremely annoying. I tracked the source of the noise to the x-axis belt rubbing on the idler to the right side.

The idler is maxed out to the front side of the printer and the belt still wants to ride even further forward. I thought my motor pulley was too far out so I pushed it in some but the problem persisted. Upon closer inspection, I see that if you push the belt all the way into the belt holder on x-carriage per the instructions, the idler will ride all the way forward against the wall of the x-axis idler housing. In the picture below, you can see how these two do not align.

The fix is to redesign the x-axis idler holder with a wider idler hole so that the idler can be aligned with the belt properly or to redesign the x-carriage so that the belt holder isn't as "deep".

I have contacted Prusa with this information and will be redesigning the idler piece tonight as it's the simpler one and also easier to remove.

I have the same problem. However I think the problem is the X carriage. The bolts and surface holding the ends of the belt in place are placed to far to the front of the printer.

See the green rectangle I put in the drawing, that is 1mm at the end of the bolts.

I have this same issue on my new printer. In fact I have noticed a small amount of black rubber from the belt has collected below the idler where it has been chafing. Has anyone, or Prusa, redesigned the carriage to properly align the belt end holders with the idler? I'm new to printing and haven't delved into design work yet...

Thanks

This is a quite common problem, also observed on the MK2 :-/

I chatted with several representatives from PRUSA and they're aware of the issue... not sure why they haven't implemented a fix

Re: X-axis belt rubbing on Idler issue and fix

I got the same problem.

First I thought i had tightened a screw on the right side too little or too much ... but as an intermediate solution i will not put the gt2 belt so deep in the x-axis carriage. As soon as I get ABS i will print modified parts.

What do you guys think of flipping the idler-pulley screw and drilling a hole in the upper part of the frame to reach through with an allen-key to be able to replace screw & pulley without disassembling the x-y-interface on the right side?

Best regards,
Peter

Do you still have the original files to adjust for the regular or Igus RJ4JP( bearings?

Are you able to make the manipulation or share original file haha?

Thanks again!

No guarantee that it works !

I just removed the igus bearings.

Thank you! I will print it out and try it within the next few days. Updated it a little bit to accommodate my Titan Extruder mount. I'll post it as a remix to yours if it works out well.

It should work.

On my PRUSA blackPC edition :ugeek: it do very well. It's just a try and error solution. I raised the beltholder for an millimeter. Maybe we must raise it a little more.

This was happening to me so I remixed the Prusa x-axis idler:

So far, so good.

Re: X-axis belt rubbing on Idler issue and fix

I eliminated the squeak without having to take things apart by running some teflon coated dental floss between the idler and then plastic wall of the cavity. I tie it in a loop outside the cavity so that it can not get tangled up.
