Layer Shifts

Hello
i have been having random layer shifts occurring at random times. it could be months between occurrences and it happens on both X and Y and could only be a single shift per print. the most recent print had one on the Y axis the a while later one on the X axis then nothing else. I don't believe the issue to be mechanical due to the frequency it happens at and changing the printer from silent mode to high power mode seems to help. so my questions is could it be caused by a build up of heat in the Rambo case? is it worth it to consider adding heat sinks to the rambo board? or could this be something else?

Re: Layer Shifts

Upload a photo of a part with the shift you are seeing. Also, what are the values reported for belt tension (if the Mk2.5 has that feature)?

Re: Layer Shifts

sorry about these not being on the build plate. It kind of gave my daughter a chance to play with them. but as far as how they were printed the belly for each was facing the front of the printer. I tried to search for a way to measure the belt tension for the mk2.5 but it sounds like i have to measure the belt deflection is that correct?

the Gray one show the 2 layer shift on the neck

the Red one was done about 2 week earlier and is otherwise fine

Re: Layer Shifts

I'm a Mk3 user, so for what it's worth... I understand the infrequency, but I'd still check a couple mechanical sources first, just to be sure. Warm day, belt stretches a bit more than usual, chance of slippage higher...

Check belt tension - if it's easy to squish the belts together they could be a tooth tighter.
-- On a Mk3, 2 lbs should deflect the lower belt about 1/4 to 3/8 inch.
Check your belt drive gears - are they properly set on the motor shafts: one set screw on the shaft flat is tightened first, then tighten the offset set screw.
Check wire harness locations. I've seen earlier printers harnesses drooping and hanging in ways they can catch on things as the extruder moves and cause shifts.

If it's a RAMBO overheat, you could try placing most any fan so it blows air that direction. It'd be one of the easiest ways to test the heat theory.

Re: Layer Shifts

I'm getting occasional layer shifts too. I noticed in the "MMU Fail Stats" menu on the printer, there are like a bunch of power failures logged. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. I'm on the mk2.5 with the MMU2 so the mk2.5 doesn't have power panic... I have a feeling either my power supply is failing or maybe I'm getting power glitches in the garage. I got a APC battery backup today that I'm going to use with the printer now to see if I stop getting those power failure messages. If not, I might replace the printers power supply. I've always suspected my MK2.5 power supply might be too weak for the MMU2.0 running in conjunction with the printer...
