I'd head to the main site vs a kit provider: https://vorondesign.com/ is where you can find out things, and watch some cool clips of kinematics!

I looked at a Voron.  I may eventually buy one.  I hate to pay 2K on a printer that I have to piece together myself.

I thought  the same. For me currently the only alternative would be a Ratrig as you can configure the package you get and just be done for the ordering and customs and stuff (nearly, some parts are missing but not much). I still prefer to wait for more XL infos and hopefully before shipping starts review from the known youtubers. XL is preferred as the SW tooling from Prusa is to notch (in my opinion) and I really like their ecosystem, upgrades provided and the features XL is providing.

That's the thing - there are 5 models to choose from, all to be built by you, and you decide on the quality of parts, tuning, and all the rest.

It ain't for everyone and hell, I don't even know why I decided to build a Trident, but that's what I am doing. I decided to not build the 2.4 as this will be the first, from scratch, build I have done so I wanted something a teensy bit easier. (and now I have parts on the super slow boat across the pacific being delayed, damnit!)

For me $1k is the price limit for one printer for my 3D printing hobby. I didn't buy Ultimaker in the past because they were too expensive for me and Prusa is going the same direction now. Targeting public institutions and B2B business I fear they will forget the entry level/ regular guys @home.

Voron or Prusa XL would be really nice to have. Especially XL is showing next steps which we can expect for the MK4 and I hope MK series will stay under $1k price point.

RE:

The Trident is the less "sexy" more reasonable Voron. Less overbuilt in some ways and a bit more conventional. I suppose it is the more direct competition to the other more traditional CoreXY printers out there. I guess that is why most people build either a Voron 2 or a Voron 0. 😉

If you don't enjoy building a 3D printer and invest some time into setting it up as well, including various calibrations Vorons are maybe not the best choice, if you don't mind or even enjoy it, they are for you. The do print great and fast too, of course.

In any case, anyone interseted in building a Voron, by kit or by self sourcing, should definitely have a look at the Voron discord server first to find out what are decent kits or for all sorts of questions the BOM and instructions may not explain.

This. I finally gave in and opened a Discord account for access to the Voron Discord (and Prusa, but well...). There's a constant firehose stream of great info there. I am learning a lot just lurking and keeping an eye on it. You also can gain direct access to the designers; I've asked Steve Builds a couple of questions & gotten answers.

I'm starting to source a Trident 250 build myself. Spreading out the cost over months of orders makes it palatable. I get that the V2.4 is the sexy build, but I've only tackled a Mini+ kit so far, and the Trident looks more than capable enough without dealing with the flying gantry complication. Doing the sourcing research and the eventual build is a large part of my motivation; it's fun.

Trident 250 build

I decided on the 300 build. Slightly larger X/Y than current printers I have, no increase in Z.

Indeed. Key to discord is also the search function. Most problems have been discussed in some form already at some point and if ones own problem is yet a bit different no harm in asking anew.

I can't talk too much about a Trident or a V2 though. I am one of those weird V0 guys 😉

To quote 3dPnero: "There is no space". The main thought when  building a V0 and its not about the build volume. But it's so cute when it's finally up and printing. 😉

Yeah it is marginally more useful than a Confluence search.. 🙂

There is also a lot of pinned items but I don't think anyone has cleaned up those pins in the channels .. ever?!?

Search is tough, I'm getting the hang of it slowly. The pins help a bit even if some are rather out of date.

I'm a masochist I guess. I am looking at the V0 for later (and for ultimate self-punishment the ERCF). I've got years worth of build lined up.

Ah, multimaterial is always very satisfying for masochists. As I do already own an MMU2s however I did not venture down that rabbit hole again 😉

I also have not informed myself that well about the Enraged Rabbit, how does it compare performance wise to to an MMU. I know it is modular and can more easily support more colours but it would be interesting to see how the compare in equivalent settings (eg some 5 colour test prints).

Some might ask what's the purpose of a V0 after all? I can tell you. It is the perfect christmas bauble printer:

😆 I'm getting ready to use my Mini to print up some Christmas baubles similar to that. Also learning some more Fusion 360 to generate a couple of custom things my wife and I are going to gift to friends. Got some Hatchbox silk red and Sunlu gold for those projects.

I am currently watching Nero's V0.1 LDO kit marathon build from a few months ago. It's definitely not a beginner build, but still looks like fun. I also watched his ERCF streams (even caught a couple live), and even with the struggles it looks like a nice challenge to tackle. I got gently taken down for a "having a bad time" comment. 😜 "No, we're learning" That puts it all in a much better context, and is a good mental shift.

A little back on track for the OP question. Finances & space allowing, why not both? A V2.4 can start as soon as parts are in hand, XL won't be for the better part of a year.

RE: Waiting for Prusa "XL" or getting a Voron 2.4 kit?

The V0.1 is just an incredible slot machine, if you have built one (or seen 3dpnero building one), you know what I mean. I don't think if you managed building a Mk3s kit building a V0.1 will present an unsolvable challenge for you. If you get an LDO kit and don't have to do much cable crimping etc it is really not much more diffult, other than everything is a bit cramped. Especially with Discord being there to help you if you run into some issues. It's never a failure, it's just not finished yet 😉
There is one thing I would do differently the next time though: Get the mod that keeps the nuts in place, at least for the bed extrusions. If you don't have that you are paying for your sins for a short while at least.

To get back on topic again. There are also a number of V2 builds in the V0 formfactor on Github which are not official but have gotten quite a few builds already too. For example the "Micron" ( https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yAejaew1gHY). Alternatively there are official V2.4 builds down to 200 mm3 build volume. That seems a very reasonable size in my opinion, still considerably more compact than a 350mm3 monster (and more compact than an Mk3s) and almost the build size of a Mk3s with an enclosure however and some serious speed capabilities. A small V2.4 and a large Prusa XL (tool changer) would be a fine combo.

Pulled the trigger on a Formbot 2.4/300 kit a few days ago. €1000 incl. shipping and tax is significantly cheaper than the XL, even if I have to upgrade some parts (and print a gazillion plastic parts). The latest Formbot kits seems to have a lot of quality parts, so I think it will be usable out of the box.
The plan now is to keep my Prusa Mini as the "always works" printer, and the Voron will be more of the tinkering machine.

My biggest issue with the XL is not really the price though, but rather the exterior dimensions, it will simply not fit on my desk. I really hope Prusa will develop a smaller (MK4 ?) coreXY at some point, with all the cool XL features.

I can see some of the feature in a smaller printer, but they would have to design a 6th printer to do that.  The Mk3S would have to be completely redone so it might need to just be a separate lineage.

I did a Formbot3d Trident 300mm kit - and everything is working quite well so far.
