New exported gcode from Prusaslicer just doesn't start printing

Hi all,

Just thought I'd see if anyone has had this problem. Today I downloaded an STL game piece, added it to PrusaSlicer, exported the Gcode, stuck it on the pendrive, into the printer, but when I print ... nothing. It moves from the the "Print Preview" page to the "Printing" page when I click Print, but then shows "Printing Time = 17s"(!) and "Remaining Time = N/A".

This is instead of showing the "E HEATING" page which I would expect, just like all my other prints do. So firstly, I'm not sure why it gets stuck on that page. Secondly, nothing happens. I know the heat bed and hotend are fine and the thermisters are working since I can load, unload, pre-heat, heat to a specific temperature, and cooldown all fine.

I tried doing different things such as the following just to prove that something (that I don't know about) must be different:

  • the gcode files that came on the pen drive (e.g. Benchy, Sheep, Whistle) all show the "E HEATING" page and print fine
  • my old files I exported with default settings (0.15, 0.2, etc) all show the "E HEATING" page and print fine
  • my newer files with slower settings all show the "E HEATING" page and print fine

Any file I now try as of this morning and export to gcode and print (default settings, slower settings, 0.15, 0.2, Quality, Draft, whatever) all just stop on that "Printing" page, and nothing happens on the screen or with any motor. It doesn't show the "E HEATING" page, and you can see the temperature of the hotbed and hotend going down. Nothing changes on screen. Nothing moves on the printer. Nothing prints at all.

Back story: When I first got the printer around 6 weeks ago, it printed like a dream. After two weeks I started having problems, such as finding chips in the extruder gears, slowing my printing down (to make it successful, even though it was much slower), a MINDA probe problem (now replaced by support), and finally a clogged hotend which I managed to clear. Three days later I now get the above screen with no error, and now can't print any new gcode at all. Talk about a journey!

  • Prusa Mini
  • PrusaSlicer v2.2.0+linux-x64 <- I've had this for a week or more on this version, no problem
  • Firmware v4.0.5 <- I have been printing fine for a couple of weeks or so on this version, no problem
  • Configuration Snapshot - 22 April <- this is the only thing I can think that has changed recently, but I tried exporting gcode using both the 23rd Mar and 22 Apr updates and they're the same apart from the "; generated by Prusa Slicer ..." line

I can't think of what else to try. I've been able to get out of a number of holes so far, but not this one yet! Any help appreciated. 🙂 Many thanks.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy,

could you try slicing a small file then save the project as a .3mf file,
Zip the file, and add it to a post on here, then people can have a look and see if they can see a problem with it.

Thanks @joantabb. I'll make something small and try and print it. If it fails I'll post here. Many thanks for your reply. I didn't even realise you can print directly from a 3mf and I thought it was only gcode. 🙂

Here are two simple examples I just made. I was able to print "twoish" but the most simple "simple" didn't print. I have no idea why!

(Note: I love how the forum doesn't allow me to upload 3mf files, which are zip files, but it does allow me to upload zip files. Please rename as appropriate back to *.3mf. Thanks.)

I have the exact same issue. I'm a new user. I downloaded a model, used the slicer to create the gcode and it printed great.  The next day I generate the next part in the series and it won't print.  I try the old part, prints fine.  I generated a new gcode file and the new code won't print either using the exact same model.  Clearly I've done something amiss.  I am going to uninstall and reinstall the slicer to see if that helps.

I'll try and attach both gcode files here.  The prefaced with a "1" is the newer of the two files and won't start to print on my new MINI.

If you are printing from the supplied USB stick, first thing I would try a different USB stick.

Arggggg... you are so correct @bobcousins!!  I tried a different USB stick and it started working like a charm.  I do wonder about the root cause and how to prevent it.  Regardless I'm printing again and thrilled to be doing so.  Thanks so much for your help!

@brent-2

Stick that came with my MINI has some difficulties. It works file with MINI (except MINI does not detect USB plugged in since 4.0.5) but it takes 2-3 tries to plug it into PC, make it being recognized in Windows and not disconnect when copying files there. It just may be bad. It did the job of carrying new firmware and sample G-codes, I would not expect longevity from it.

@brent-2

Swapping to another USB drive also worked for me.
