Nozzle Crashing into bed on occasion

Hello, I have been having trouble with my Prusa Mini+ over the past few months since purchasing. On occasion, when starting a print the nozzle will start too low and crash into the bed and begin etching the first layer into the print bed. Luckily I usually notice fast and quickly power the printer down.

I do not believe this to be a first layer calibration issue because I have calibrated this well and most prints are fine. In some testing when this has occurred, I have powered off the printer, raised the nozzle off the bed, and started the print anew without performing any other changes and the print will start perfectly without hitting the bed.

The inconsistency with this issue has made it very hard to pin down. Has anyone else had this issue? I have updated to the newest firmware and passed all self-tests. The only thing I can think of is an issue with the PINDA.

Thanks in advance.

Do you still have installed the old MINDA (yellow head)? It is quite possible that this is faulty, or the height is not set correctly.

RE:

At the print start does your mini the mesh bed leveling with success? If so than i would suspect the first layer calibratin. Be aware for different sheet type you need different first layer calibration.

Is the printer square? Right after I built mine I had some issues with the head crashing that sound similar. I went back and re-squared the printer; turned out it was skewed more than I thought. After squaring up and recalibrating it's been working great. Now after getting first layer calibration set on a build sheet it's about at click print and walk away.

@Chris, how did you go about squaring up the printer?

I put it on the kitchen granite counter because that's the flattest surface in the house. then checked the Z axis alignment to the bed with an engineer's square. I found it was over tightened at the electronics box bolts, causing the vertical to lean towards the bed. I adjusted until it was snug and square. Then I checked the X axis arm that the two rods were perfectly vertical, again using the engineers square. Finally, checked that the arm was parallel to the front of the bed.

After that, it's been printing great. The biggest issue was the Z axis being perpendicular to the bed.

I accidentally ran the extruder into the far side of the bed by hitting the home button on the z axis on octoprint. The stepper motor went al the way to the bottom causing the z axis to move out of vertical and the arm was no longer parallel to the bed. I straightened it out and ran a test print. I can not get a decent first layer calibration. Toward the end of the calibration, the outside of the nozzle becomes covered with filament. I have tried this a dozen times and nothing canges.

Hi @mysdawg

I am not sure you issue is the same as the original subject, then some users can be confused I guess.

Hello, the printer bed levels fine (as far as i'm aware) and the first layer calibration is not the problem. Usually it prints fine just on occasion starts too low for some reason. Thanks for the tips though!

Thanks for the advice! I will check for squareness.
