change filament sometimes results in z-axis wanting to go too high (-->unhealthy servo noises)

Hi, I have noticed that when I use the change filament option the "parking" step sometimes leads to the servo making unhealthy noises because its getting blocked in the topmost position. This would mean the software is not aware of the current position or something.

As far as I can remember, this always happened after I had octoprint connected. Is this kind of behaviour normal or known? And is it a problem for the motors?

Hi Orkelprint,

during initial configuration, the XYZ configuration routing runs the Extruder up to the top of the Z axis, and rattles it against the stops, to ensure that the X axis rails are parallel to the heatbed, so it is a normal part of setup, so as far as that in particular causing damage I wouldn't worry...

however, if this is happening during an 'in print ' (M600) filament change, the lost steps  on the Z axis motors, may well lead to the extruder crashing into the part complete model after the filament change.... and that would be a worry...

does this only happen when a colour change is executed near the top of the Z axis travel?

regards Joan

This came to me as well with latest firmware. If you choose to remove filament in menu (not during print), the extruder goes "a bit higher". Once inserting the new one, again a bit higher. I though this was some new safety function, no to be close to bed while doing this. But it is really annoing and if the extruder is quite high (as I always park at roughly 100mm), it can reach the end stops.

So if you find out, that this is a mistake, or on purpose,  I vote for removing anyhow 🙂 I understand good the will of making 3d printing for everyone and stupid proof, but sorry, some things I would like to control myself better, like extruder vertical position.

Hi Joantabb, thanks for your reply.

What I did when this happened was:

  1. Print something via octoprint
  2. wait for it to finish
  3. disconnect Octoprint (at the printer menu)
  4. Start filamentchange (at the printer menu)
  5. said problem occurs (filament change works though)
  6. print new stuff via octoprint

So I had no in print changes yet and no other problems.

I suspect that the Octoprint "after print" gcode was part of the problem (higher z position). I guess the printer expects the usual after print position or something like this. I didn't really test this though. I removed this gcode for now and will see what happens next time.
