Adding Pi3 A+ feeding from MINI PSU

Hi,

I've been printing for quite a while now with the MIN and have upgraded it to MINI+

However I always need 2 wall outlets because the MINI does not provide power for a Raspberry Pi.

So besides the MINI PSU I always have the Pi wall-wart.

Is it possible to leech some power from the buddyboard?

Either some +5V or direct PSU power to drive a buck converter to feed the Pi?

I'm using a Pi3 A+ to drive the MINI.

Kind Regards

I doubt it. The Mini's PSU is somewhat anemic as is. Can't even drive an LED light without flickering when the heat bed heats up.

What's wrong with a power strip? Or even better, put your printer and Pi on a UPS, that'll save you pain down the road. Been there.

What PSU is with your mini?

Mine came with one that was larger than could fit under the 'Prusa base' that was designed for the mini.

Turns out there are different PSU's around.

Mine is 160 W 24V 6.67A

Same as mine.

I knew there were different PSUs for the Mk3S, didn't know that was true for the Mini as well.

RE: That dreaded lightning bolt

A recurring theme on the Octoprint board is Pi under-powered when using dodgy power supplies. Seems its particularly sensitive. Note that genuine Pi PSU is 5.1v and a suprising amount of amps.

RE: Lightning indeed

That is very true.

Biggest problem are not so much dodgy PSU's but dodgy USB cables that by resistance limit the PSU to 1.5 or even 0.5 amps

Just my 2 cents

I hope you're not powering the Pi via a USB port cause that is a bad idea, in fact there is huge threat about how and why to prevent that. If you're powering your Pi from a standard USB wall wort I would suggest that is a bad idea.

The safest and most reliable way to power a Pi3 o4 4 is with a genuine Pi wall wort.
