RE: Unofficial Prusa Mini Wait Thread

Had my first jam today.  Easier to clear than the ender but not as easy as the MK3S.

@charles-h13

What caused the jam?

I have come here to chew bubblegum and perfect my MINI ... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

I have a question for the more experienced folks here. Something to discuss while you're waiting for your package to arrive.

This will be my first 3D printer.

I'm spending the winter with my in-laws and I ordered the Mini on October 15, expecting a November delivery, so I could play with it and share the learning experience with my 87 year old father-in-law. Well, as we all know, the November thing didn't happen.

My mini hasn't shipped yet, but may ship soon (?)

However, I will be taking the week-long drive back home in a month and I'm wondering how to handle getting the printer back home.

Do I let it be delivered here at my in-laws and:

1. Keep it in the un-opened box to travel back home

2. Open, inspect it for obvious broken bits, then pack it back up in the box for the drive home.

3. Open and assemble it. Play with it for a week or two, and then:

    3a. Disassemble it and repack it in the original box for travel back home

    3b. Travel with it still assembled in the car. Is this safe, or will it damage the printer?

or option 4: Contact Prusa and have them ship it directly to my house.  I can have someone pick it up for me at my house, so I'm not worried about porch pirates. I worry a little about losing my place in line. Also, it may be several weeks until I can inspect it in case there is damage. Will Prusa care about that?

-Mike

I would do 2 & 3 that way you can contact support right away if you run into problems or something is broke otherwise you will have 2-3 week delay in find out you need a part or help.

So better to know sooner than later plus you get to play with your new toy 🙂

What caused the jam?

Not sure.  I was having a little difficulty getting black galaxy to stick and I might have gotten ti too low.

Root beer, to be specific.

Were you using the textured plate and PLA? On mine, I really have to smash in the first layer when using PLA and textured plate. There's extremely little adhesion with this combination even on a freshly washed plate. I'd like to just switch to PETG because the textured plate works beautifully with it but I have yet to dial in PETG to get it to look good (much stringing - I think the Prusament PETG MINI profiles are not quite there yet).

I got a jam on ejecting PETG. This is my first bowden setup so I don't know exactly how the ejection works (what is ramming?) The slight bulbous end of the filament got stuck on the hot end side of the bowden tube and the extruder gear just ground through the filament on ejection. Had to cut the filament and pull out of the tube. I was thinking that the way the bowden tube is set up with a compression nut that maybe there is a better connection method, like festo style? Maybe the compression fitting on the tube compresses it slightly too much and makes ejection difficult.

Option 3B, if you can pack it in a box & secure the base to the bottom of the box. The rest of the box should have enough clearance to protect the Mini from accidental contact. Seal it up, then give the Mini its own seat in the car & belt it in (or secure it similarly) .

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do with all your might!

Twice I have tried Prusa Galaxy Black in the Mini. Both times it has clogged and failed the prints an hour or two in. Prints PLA and PETG fine. Patiently waiting for firmware updates.

I like that option—most fun for me. That is, if there is no damage from motion in the car.

I have had similar results recently.  I love the filament look, but it is not worth the trouble,

Quick question for those who have received theirs already (as mine will be here Monday) on my Prusa Mk3s Units i use hairspray prior to preheat and print. Do you use Any ahesives at all on your printbed or is it just adhearing and working without anything?

@littleneutrino

I've been struggling and have had to smash the first layer, which I hate doing.  I started using purple glue stick and all is perfect.  7 prints straight with no issues.

@olef & @derek

Are you both using the textured plates?

@littleneutrino

I do not use anything on the plates. Textured adhesion with PLA is poor and PETG is okay but not as good as on MK3 textured plates. Smooth plate with PLA is no problem at all. I think the MINI textured plates are different than the MK3 textured plates. The pattern seems smaller and I suspect the coating formulation has changed. I tried cleaning with dish soap and sponge but PLA still fails to adhere even if I smash the first layer. It acts like teflon.
