What is the recommended temperature range for heat gun?
Hi, sometimes I need to sand off corners, edges or part of surfaces to touch up the finished prints. However, doing so changed the color of the sanded part. Tried to use a soldering iron but it did not work. Is a heat gun the best tool to recover the original color? What minimum temperature should I be looking at? 40c or 50c?

A heat gun will work. I have also used acetone baths on ABS.

It depends on the filament. Look up the glass temperature, you need to get just over that without melting the bulk.

Or one that is adjustable. Mine does what too hot, but I use distance to insulate the temperature.

The success of using a heat gun approach is HIGHLY dependent on the geometry of the part, where the sanding discoloration occurs on the part and the proximity of other, smaller cross-section elements near or adjacent to the area being treated, so no generalized answer will cover all situations. If the print is in a darker filament and the sanding has caused (typlically) lighter edges or areas, I have had success rubbing or burnishing the affected areas with a light grease or mineral oil and wiping with an absorbent cloth to remove any excess agent. YMMV.

Can rubbing with light grease or mineral oil return the prints to its normal colors permanently? I tried oil used for cooking on a print made with darker filament. The color looked recovered the instant I applied oil on it. However, after I rubbed it with a paper towel as I don't want oily greasy prints, it returned to discoloration stage. Is there a permanent solution?

In my experience it has been permanent, however, I have not experimented with all colors and filament types. It could be helpful if you can post a picture(s) showing your specific issues.

Wagner Spraytech has been a worth-it small heat gun for electronics so far for hard-to-reach exteriors. The narrow nozzle enables it to concentrate on tight spaces or small, focused heat utilizations. I’m satisfied with how much abuse it can take.
