What brand of 3D Pen do you recommend?

I am curious which brands of 3D pens people would recommend, (or which ones to avoid). Reviews seem to be all over. I am a director of a center at a library, where we do 3D printing (mostly with adults or older kids). So I am looking for pens that will give decent results, while fairly easy to use (and maintain) at a good price point: in other words, the Prusa of 3D pens 😀
Thanks

Well, the Prusa Mk3 is considered by many to be the best 3D printer for under $1000USD.
Is that what you're looking for--the best 3D pen for under $1000USD?
If not, I think a price point/range would be helpful in providing opinions.

If it were me, I think I'd go to "the river" (Amazon), and do a search for 3D pens, then filter that search by whatever other criteria are important (price, filament size, customer ratings, etc.) and read customer feedback--good & bad. IME, those kinds of reviews (provided there are significant numbers of them) are more useful than many/most "10 Best" sites.

YMMV.

I don't think the MK3 will be used as a 3D printing pen anytime soon. As Rufus alluded to though a search, not just on Amazon, but in your general search engine for "best 3d pen 2018 or 2019. Add "printing" in the search if you have to.
You can modify the search depending on what you find. Don't forget to look for the newest post by restricting the history. To me a 3D pen was more of a novelty, but I did my research and bought the Mynt3D.
I don't use it often but I think I found a niche for it that many may not of thought of.

Think of this. You print a multi-piece item and now you want to glue it together. What if you build little solder notches into the project? When you put it together you use your 3D pen to bond the parts together and sand any excess off.
I'm not an artist, so doodling is not what I had planned for it. I do let me granddaughter use it so she will find things to do with it also from time to time.

I have a 3Dsimo mini (The old version of the MultiPro). The pen itself is not the best quality but it does work fine and the additional tools are really handy (especially for postprocessing my 3D prints). I also really like the concept of the kit they offer.

Ah, I knew I should have elucidated in my initial response... 😆

I considered a more general search. In fact, I did a cursory search for "best 3d pen 2018". The results I got were from a lot of entities/sites that do "Best 10..." lists that IME/O aren't as much "best" as they are best marketed (or hyped). I've been down that road (made that mistake?)--abashedly--many times. 😳 The reviews (if any--many are seemingly just ads/marketing copy) are usually (again IME) those of one individual ("professional" reviewer?) vs. actual customer/users as they are on "the river".

Of course there are other vendors who have the same kind of customer reviews, which can also be helpful.

Again, YMMV.

I purchased a Polaroid device from Amazon as a birthday gift for a 13year old. Works really well and for £20 worth a punt. Also added a bag of extra filaments.

Like David, I have the Mynt3D pen and I don't use it much. It was more of a lets try this out, use as a way to seal gaps in 3D printed items, etc. Haven't had an issue with it yet.

I find I have lots of short samples from the MMUv1... if a filament jams, the next filament has a chunk ground out of it... I save these lengths for use with the pen!

This is quite tough to answer since there are many good 3D pens out there. But you may take a look here https://www.allthat3d.com/3d-printing-pen/ to see the hottest 3D pens at the moment.

If you plan on using those for more than touch-up jobs on prints, I'd recommend some that have speed and temperature control. Those usually have little LCD screen showing basic info, instead of just one switch for PLA and ABS. 3Doodler and 3Dsimo are popular, but they may not be cheapest. Also some pens use proprietary filaments and do not work with normal filament, which I think is bogus if it is not pen designed specifically for kids (which use lower temperature or cold extrusion). Make Anything youtube channel does some 3D pen reviews and experience on his channel.

I have cheap pen from Lidl shop and more expensive digital one from Gembird (some chinese rebrand no doubt), since I use them just to finish and decorate prints they both do the job.

To date I've glued a few prints together by using a cheap tip I bought for my soldering iron, dedicated to plastic. It's worked well enough and I suspect it gives about the same level of finesse as one would get with a pen. You just have to manually feed in any extra material - think TIG welding vs stick or a wire-fed welder... 🙂

@vintagepc

That's pretty clever, I'll have to give that a shot. Thanks!

I suggest you should go with 3d simo. I recently got one for my 10yr kid. I read many online reviews and decided to go with 3d simo basi 3dpen for my kid. Got a discount of 9$ from here https://ratingy.org/best-3d-printing-pens/

If you are looking for Professional use or for adult use you can go with 3d simo multi pro, heard good reviews about that too.

I was actually looking at a few on Amazon.

This seemed to get very good reviews, adjustable speed and temperature control.

Never bought one before, not sure if this is worth a purchase for touching up jobs,

Probably wait until it goes onto a deal
