Satin Spring Steel Sheet - PLA Prints don‘t stick anymore

Hi,

i‘ve ordered the new powder coated satin spring steel sheet a while ago. I‘m a bit disappointed, because using the same PLA filament any print on the new steel sheet does not stick anymore. My temperatures are default 210/60 degrees. The sheet is always cleaned before printing. Any sugesstions for the temperature of the sheet (actually 65 degrees)? Onto the default sheet, every print was fine (with default temperatures), no problem with the stickness.

My first question is: Did you recalibrate your Live Z for your new satin sheet?  Different types of sheets will call for different Z settings.

99.9%, you didn't adjust Live Z. My satin sheets have arrived but I'm out of town for a few weeks, so I can't measure them. But if they're anything like the textured sheets, then they are a fair bit thinner than the smooth sheets and thus you have to adjust Live Z to a more negative value or--just as you're saying--the filament won't stick.

Complete new recalibration
thank you for your replies - yes, i did a complete new calibration, Not only z-axis adjustment. I‘ll run it again, let‘s see what will happen :)

Having said that, anyone who is using higher bed temps with the new sheet?

Cleaned with what?

Consider washing it with Dawn and a non-scratch scrubber of the Z adjustment and IPA cleaning don’t work.

Thanks for the hint @cwbullet - this could be my fault, i used isopropyl alc. like i dit it with the default bed - i will clean it with some dishwashing fliud and try again printing 🙂

Was only in mind not to use aceton like the descritpion points out ^^

Edit: (from the knowledge base)

Maintenance

  • Attracts fingerprints - A good indication of where your sheet is dirty/greasy and that you need to clean it. Clean with ~90% IPA when the sheet is cold. If ~90% IPA is not sufficient, clean with dishwasher soap. Do not leave the sheet wet! It has an anti-corrosion layer but is still not recommended.
  • Never clean with acetone! Same issue as with the textured sheet (surface deteriorates)
  • Some types of paper towels may leave traces on the sheet (fiber pieces).

@sebastianr

Just to clarify, @cwbullet's dish washing advice is not specific to the satin sheet but applies to all kinds of steel sheets. Now I would argue that unless you're in the habit of leaving big fingerprints on your sheet, cleaning with 90+ IPA should suffice--as long as you have proper Live Z. But nothing wrong with giving the sheet a good scrub when nothing else helps, as there may well be residual leftovers from previous prints (of the model or of the finger variety) that keeps things from sticking. My money though is still on Live Z.

I'm recalibrating and clean for testing purpose with dishwashing fluid. I'll give an update asap....

Too much grease and oils from fingerprints, and all the IPA does is smear it around the sheet. If you're careful and leave your fingers off the sheet, IPA is enough. And yes, Prusa doesn't recommend using soap and hot water but pretty much everyone on this forum who cares to help others is in the "do it when needed" camp.

I view sheets as consumables but I have never had one die on me because of washing it with soap and water. They usually die from impatience. My impatience... ripping off PETG models before they're cold or printing PC without putting glue stick on 😢

@sebastianr

I would not use the wording “Never clean with acetone!”.  I would substitute: “Use Acetone if you are considering tossing the sheet and buying  another.”  I have had good success adding years of use to my sheets by resetting them with acetone.  I technically do not clean them in acetone.  I spray and quickly wipe and then remove the remaining acetone with IPA.

Consider it, if the sheet stops sticking to sticks way too much with standard PLA.

@fuchsr

I would not disagree, but it is more than fingerprints.  It is also reside from the filaments.

I use hair spray. It definitely helps.

@airsyspro

It does help a little as long as you Z is close and your bed is clean.

A day late on this, but I can give you exact measurement on my new satin sheet vs the smooth PEI.  My satin textured sheet is 0.62mm thick, my smooth PEI is 1.23mm thick.  I was really surprised that the satin is half as thick as the smooth PEI.  Definitely needs a different sheet profile setup.

@egar

Don't assume, you can just add the difference and be done. Technically it's not the different thickness of the sheets that makes the difference it's the different thickness of the coating since PINDA is triggered by the metal, not the coating.

If PINDA would be triggered by the coating you would not need to recalibrate for each sheet, regardless of the thickness.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

@robin

Agreed.  I went through the whole Z calibration and live Z adjustments when I setup the new profile for the satin sheet.

The point I was trying to make was that the thickness differences between types of sheets is significant.

I told you to give an update asap - all fine now, seemed to be a fatal PEBKAC error of myself, sticking fine now, after recalibrating twice; it also sticks after cleaning with IPA. Thanks for your advices 🙂

What, exactly, was the PEBKAC issue?

What do you have your Live Z set to on the Satin sheet?

 I posted in the other thread, but was wondering if anyone had any advice for the satin sheet issues I'm having: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/601207/

@sebastianr or @cwbullet @fuchsr ?
