Prusament issue - filament catching in the roll notch

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to post about Prusament, but I haven't found a category for it.

I would like to have the community feedback about an issue I have encountered on the Prusament (which I love by the way), and that I strangely haven't seen much talked about.

Do you know the notches that are seen in the Prusament rolls and that are used to hold the tip of the filament in place in new rolls? For that purpose it is a smart design. But when printing, occasionally the filament gets caught in the notch at the rim of the spool, and that has caused all my printers (I have 4) to have a X-axis crash. It happens especially on taller prints, which I think is understandable, as the filament is oriented more horizontally and it is harder for it to get out of the notch.

I am trying to patch the issue with some adhesive tape to cover the notches, but I am surprised to discover this issue...

Has anyone else seen this issue? How do you deal with it? Is Prusa looking into it?

Thanks everyone!

Print and attach one of these filament guides.

I have tried many and this one is just outstanding. Should be standard in the kit.

I do full Z height prints with Prusament without issues.

I recomment PETG, a 0.4 nozzle, 0.15 layer height, 3 perimeters and 10% infill.

@morphias

Oh, by the way, I forgot to ask - did you run into the same issue I did?

I printed the part you suggested, and it does not fit on my spool holder, because it is to tall. Removed a couple mm, it fits nicely.

No, I've never had the issue you described with the filament catching as I've always run the guide.

Unless they have changed (unlikely, but need someone with both models to confirm) the stock spool holder in the MK3S to MK3S+ upgrade, it should fit perfectly.

Make sure it's attached to the correct gap and is installed the right way up. 🙂 👍
