Pre Newbie needs shopping advice. Which printer and when?

Which printer and when?

Mini?  I worry that I will be wanting to upgrade sooner or later to a full I3.  And, an I3 at the end of the day is not that much more expensive.  ~$500 to ~800 between 'em shipped to the US.

I3?  Maybe, but I worry that there will be a MK4 real soon now, and I will regret purchasing now, when I should have waited.  The end of year blog suggests 4 new printers this year, and I haven't seen any of 'em yet.  I just don't want to have a Mk3 show at my doorstep 2 months before a Mk4 comes out.

I can wait, but ...  Need some thought leadership on this one to help guide me in.

Don’t trust forum advice.

I was told the Mk4 could come out during the Summer but I went ahead and ordered a Mk3s+ anyway since I know i'll be getting a printer that has matured and is well supported. You don't know what growing pains a new printer model will have and how long those pains will last with a new printer.

The Mini is designed to be a good, inexpensive, starter machine.  Judging by the very low percentage of users who post problems on here it does that job well. It has a few limitations: print volume, temperatures not sufficient for some of the more interesting filaments; so if you're even a little ambitious and you can afford it go for the Mk3.

- and if you want to fully understand it, build the MK3 kit.

The MK4, XL, or whatever is brewing in the Prusa back rooms are likely to be oversubscribed at launch and, if past releases are a guide, there may be a long delivery lead time for the new models.  If one come out 2 months after your printer arrives, you might have accumulated 6 months printing experience before your MK4 could be delivered.

Buy the best you can afford now and  make your early mistakes on a machine that has plenty of experienced users who will be able to help you through them.

Cheerio,

Only you can know what you want the printer for and therefor which one to buy. Think about the size of the objects you want to print and the materials you want to use.

I have no information re. purported MK4 but I'd hazard a guess that Prusa will wait to Covid over
